Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, repairing pavements, assisting with pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inventorying materials, inspecting contract work, and operation of heavy equipment. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions. Work requires the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. This position is subject to Emergency call back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: + Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures + Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching + Experience with installation of erosion control devices + Knowledge of work zone safety and NCDOT Workplace policies and procedures + Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper Additional Expectations: A working knowledge of the principals involved in the NCDOT operation and use, demonstrated ability to operate equipment to which assigned effectively. Ability to perform routine tasks and to understand and follow written and oral instructions. Ability to communicate with various people. Employee must have ability to lift and carry 50 lbs, climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. Safety toe footwear is needed for this position. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
