Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, repairing pavements, assisting with pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inventorying materials, inspecting contract work, and operation of heavy equipment. Employee must be able to operate medium dump truck safely. Skill in the safe use & care of assigned equipment, hand & power tools, & perform manual maintenance duties & other duties as directed by supervisor. Employee must have ability to act upon both verbal & written communication. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: + Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching + Experience performing drainage maintenance activities (such as shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, and drainage structures) + Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper + Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures + Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety & NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices Additional Expectations: Safety toe footwear is required within 30 days of employment. Employee must have ability to traverse steep & uneven terrain. Employee must have ability to lift 50 lbs. Employee must be able to work in extreme temperature conditions. Ability to work in emergency situations and inclement weather. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. As a condition of employment, release forms (ALCDRG-01 and ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
