Position Nos. 60020182 and 60020190 will be filled from this posting. You only need to apply once to be considered for both positions. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads in Chatham County. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, setting up work zones, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, repairing asphalt pavements, assisting with pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inventorying materials, inspecting contract work, operating heavy equipment, responding to emergencies, and assisting with snow/ice removal. Position will also monitor/informally supervise daily maintenance activities performed by two or more employees to include tasks performed by inmates and other transportation workers. Manual labor includes, but is not limited to operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks, and litter pickup. Employee in this position is expected to perform assigned tasks and follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Work requires ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and exposure to extreme temperature conditions. Work may include lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly and exerting up 100lbs of force occasionally. Position is subject to emergency call back and may require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: + Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices + Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching + Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew + Experience in snow and ice removal operations + Experience in operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper Additional Expectations: The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Release forms ALCDRG-01 and ALCDRG-06 must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol. Safety toe footwear required.
