Overnight Shift

Position Function: To provide transportation of patients to and from treatment areas, and to maintain general transportation/mobility of supplies and equipment.

Job Class Specifics

2. Shows respect for patients by knocking on door before entering room, and making proper inquiries before going behind drawn curtains in patient rooms.
3. Utilizes appropriate, mechanical means or equipment to position, lift, transfer, or transport patients in a manner that minimizes the risk of personal and patient injury and that fosters proper body mechanics and procedures.
4. Assists in other related functions as assigned.
5. Safely transports patients to and from treatment areas, ensures that each patient is properly attired to ensure personal dignity and respect during transport.
6. Ensures that all procedures with regards to signing patients on and off the nursing unit or within the department are in compliance.
7. Responds to inquiries, phone calls,etc., in a professional and positive manner that enhances the image of the department and its staff.
8. Refers all patient inquiries regarding their care or their status to the appropriate professional in a manner that conveys positive recognition and enhancement of the departments chain of command.
9. Assists with patient lifts and transfers when indicated.
10. Observes patient's condition during transport and reports changes in patient's condition to clinical personnel.
11. Assists in orientation of new personnel serving as a "buddy" to new transporters.
12. Responds appropriately to emergency situations.
13. Performs external cardiac compressions to patients during ERT activities if required.
14. Follows hospital patient safety standards.
15. Has knowledge of dispatcher function and is able to temporarily fill that job function.
16. Transports medications within the hospital as requested and needed according to Hospital policy.

Physical and Mental Requirements: Classified as heavy work by the Dictionary of Occupational Titles. May exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 20 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly in order ro move objects.
- Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time.
- Stands on carpet, tile, or linoleum on a constant basis.
- Walks throughout the hospital constantly.
- Sits on a hard or cushioned chair occasionally during shift.
- Pushes/ pulls wheelchairs and stretchers up to 250 pounds constantly.
- Pushes/pulls wheelchairs and stretchers over 250 pounds occasionally.
- Constantly bends and squats from higher to lower levels.
- Occasionally twists and kneels.
- Reaches to heights of up to two feet overhead on a constant basis.
- Ability to respond rapidly to emergencies (on occasion, may respond to fire alarm by climbing up to six flights of stairs).
- Ability to perform external cardiac massage for up to five minutes without relief.
- Near-visual acuity for deciphering fine print.
- Auditory acuity adequate for hearing telephone conversation, normal voice tones when not facing the individual, alarms, and overhead pages.
Mental Requirements: Must possess good general mental health; ability to work under pressure; ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form. Must establish priorities among essential functions of the job and coordinate these functions with others; ability to speak, read and write the English language. Ability to read and comprehend medical terminology preferred.

Working Environment: Work is performed in a clean, well-ventilated indoor area. Possible exposure to patients with infectious diseases or to bodily fluids which may contain infectious agents.

Reporting Structure: Reports to Administrative Director of Rehabilitation and Transport. In his/her absence reports to Chief Operating Officer.

Qualifications and Standards

Education: High school graduate or equivalent.

Experience: Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required. Experience in health care preferred. Knowledge of orthopedic appliances, traction equipment, and their various uses helpful.

Certifications/Licensure: Current CPR certification required.
