Trauma Injury Prevention Specialist

Responsible for assisting with all injury prevention related activities and program development.  Works to reduce the burden of injury and improve trauma care through injury prevention, outreach, and public education. 

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES / SPECIFIC JOB COMPETENCIES

1 Trauma Injury Prevention:

• Implements and further develops programs such as the Child Passenger Safety Program and the Car Seat Loaner Program.

• Assists with fall prevention, helmet/bicycle education, teen driving safety, and Think First Brain Injury prevention programs. Maintains inventory of supplies and educational materials.

• Assists with coordination and implementation of all Safe Kids related events; supports existing partnership with Safe Kids California Santa Barbara County Partners.

• Maintains documentation of injury prevention data, compiling statistics and preparing reports for Trauma Services as needed.

• Collaborates with management on administration, implementation, and documentation of Richie Funding for pediatric injury prevention. 

2 Outreach:

• Represents Trauma Services at community events such as health fairs and school safety events related to injury prevention.

• Works in collaboration with other hospital departments that offer community outreach activities to include injury prevention efforts.

• Assists with promoting awareness of the Trauma Center on a local and regional level through various outreach and educational activities. 

3 Professional:

• Participates in local, regional, state and national trauma events as directed by supervisor.

• Assists with preparation of pediatric and adult injury prevention information and activity documentation for the site survey by the American College of Surgeons.

• Assists with maintenance of trauma related education materials, working in conjunction with Cottage Health's Marketing Department for development of materials. 

LEVEL OF EDUCATION

Bachelor's Degree preferred

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS 

Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) certification required within first year of hire; Fall Prevention coach training required within first year of hire American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) preferred

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

Basic Word, Excel and PowerPoint skills Intermediate to Advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills, including preparation of tables, charts, slides, and other graphic capabilities preferred

YEARS OF RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE 

1 year of experience in a position that included public speaking and making presentations Injury prevention, public health, pediatric, geriatric, or healthcare experience preferred
