Job Summary: The trauma registrar is responsible for collection, abstraction and analysis of required data elements on trauma patients for inclusion into a trauma data collection system. The trauma registrar is responsible for data submission/distribution/report generation to/for the appropriate parties within the designated time frame. The trauma registrar provides the trauma data necessary to support functions of the trauma program including performance improvement, research, injury prevention, and facility funding.

Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED.

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification: Successful completion of the American Trauma Society's (ATS) registrar exam Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries (CSTR) within 3 years of employment. Successful completion of the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicines'(AAAM) injury scale coding exam Certified Abbreviated Injury Scale Specialist (CAISS) within 3 years of employment.

Work Experience: One year experience as a trauma registrar or similar health-related experience such as RN, LPN, paramedic, medical coder, HIM, etc. Experience with medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, data management and data analysis strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. Ability to analyze and process detail-oriented information. Proficient use of computer for data retrieval and entry as well as database management, report generation/validation, MS Office, email, etc. Skill in extrapolating trauma patient data from the electronic health record and in use of registry specific program. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with team members and others. Ability to be self-directed and work independently. Ability to organize and prioritize work in an effective and efficient manner.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Performs data collection from all sources (medical record, ambulance run sheets, logs, etc.) into trauma registry database. Collaborates with trauma program staff as needed to maintain efficient operations of trauma registry. Analyzes data for accuracy and completeness and validates for submission to state/national databases in a timely manner in order to keep registry current. Ensures adherence to data management protocols to maintain regulatory compliance. Maintains confidentiality and security of patient data at all times. Participates in periodic quality reviews by compiling statistical information and preparing reports necessary to support research and performance improvement activities. Assists with information requests and quality improvement activities as requested. Maintains trauma registry skills and competency through required periodic continuing education.

Decision Making: Independent judgment in making minor decisions where alternatives are limited and standard policies/protocols have been established.
