TRP Controls Design Engineer
Job Description

Vehicle Mechatronic Embedded Controls (VMEC) is a team that is comprised of inclusive and diverse Agile teams, where everyone has a voice in the conversation.  VMEC is a production level group that supports the definition, design, and development of all embedded controllers that impact vehicle motion.  Thermal Runaway Propagation (TRP) is focused on the development and execution of diagnostics and prognostics to detect and prevent thermal runaway in the High Voltage Battery System.                

VMEC TRP Team is seeking creative, highly motivated, agile problem solving TRP Controls Design Engineer with passion and expertise in Embedded Controls and Software Design with great attention to detail.  The selected candidates will develop diagnostic and prognostic algorithms using telemetry, data analysis & best practices for VMEC features and support the growth capabilities to keep us at the forefront of emerging technology

Responsibilities:                                                                                                               

Lead development of software designs for novel diagnostics or prognostics utilizing Agile software development processes.

Develop diagnostics or prognostics using standard work, design principles & best practices

Work closely and collaborate with Battery Pack Hardware teams to determine sensing sufficiency for robustness diagnostic designs via analysis

Conduct analysis on design changes utilizing tools (Matlab/Simulink, INCA/MDA, other) 

Support SIM package development with Virtual Design, Development & Validation (VDDV) team as required to accurately reflect the hardware implementation

Lead the development and review of controls AFMEA and analyze failure modes to enable robust algorithm design

Define system behavior under fault conditions and incorporate learnings into production algorithms

Ensure algorithm design adheres to all safety and government requirements & regulations

Lead technical workgroups to decompose the requirements into controls designs by working with Systems Engineers, System Architects or Technical Specialists to understand vehicle, sub-system, and behavioral requirements.

Communicate and work with the team to ensure the design is comprehended and the team is aligned with the design intent

Ensure Software Design Document, Controls Flow Diagrams & AFMEA are complete, accessible and properly stored. 

Support software development

Support or assist the team as required in implementing cohesive, efficient, testable and sustainably maintainable software components

Test & demonstrate software functionality and readiness

Verify Functional Performance of Controls Designs

Lead and support the development of feature or component BTS

Support the team with robustness and BTS testing as required on either the SIL, HIL or Vehicle

Review test results & incorporate necessary modifications into controls design

Host algorithm design reviews and ensure performance metrics are achieved based on test data

Verify acceptance criteria are met through test & data analysis

Provide feedback to hardware teams of issues identified during design & data analysis to ensure robustness

Lead issue resolution initiatives by working closely with peers to investigate and resolve issues found, incorporate lessons learned into the design

Document lessons learned and Best Practices for controls design implementation

Utilize Problem Resolution Tracking System (PRTS)

Document Intellectual Property

Required Skills:                                                                                                                  

BS in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or other applicable Engineering focuses.

Minimum 5+ years Engineering experience with proven technical and professional skills in job-related area

DFSS Black Belt Certified

Proficient of MATLAB/Simulink, DOORS, GIT environment(s); plant modeling and/or analysis tools.

Proficient in embedded C-programming, Phyton, or equivalent coding language

Knowledge of sub-system integration including design, implementation, and testing

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with sometimes incomplete requirements.

Analytical problem-solving skills where problems are unusual and difficult.

Demonstrated honesty, integrity, and trust. Lead by example.

Preferred Skills:

MS in Engineering with focus in controls or software design.

Knowledge of diagnostic or prognostic algorithm development

Knowledge of battery chemistry, sensors, and signal processing

Knowledge of Battery Management Systems and Architecture

Knowledge of Thermal Runaway Propagation controls, diagnostics & prognostics

System Modeling and Simulation (Software, Hardware, Model in-the-loop).
