It is envisioned that the employee will work in the office 5 days a week. The flexibility of a hybrid remote option with a minimum of two days in office at the primary duty station in compliance with the guidelines specified in the TTI Alternate Work Location (AWL) Arrangements will be considered during the hiring process. + The salary range for position is commensurate. Job Summary The Traffic Operations & Roadway Safety Division of the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) is looking for a passionate researcher to join our team at our headquarters in Bryan, Texas. As a member of the Operations & Roadway Safety Division, the candidate will conduct research for our clients, which include federal, state, and local government agencies, transportation industries, and non-governmental organizations. The candidate will be assigned to the Roadway Safety Program within the Division based on their interest in the safety of automated, connected, and electric vehicles and vulnerable road users and data collection, as well as the analysis of crash and surrogate safety measures data using statistical, spatial, and econometric models and machine learning tools including text analytics. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate and work with other programs within the division, such as Work Zone and Dynamic Signs, Roadway Design, and Signs and Markings, as well as other programs and divisions at TTI, such as the Center for Transportation Safety. There will also be opportunities to join interdisciplinary teams across TTI and TAMU systems. With guidance from senior researchers, the candidate is expected to serve as Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI, or contribute as a significant lead in research and proposal development. The successful candidate will have a strong background, a proven research record, and an understanding of quality and unbiased research principles. Specific duties include reviewing literature, planning research activities, coordinating and collecting data, analyzing data, writing reports, preparing and delivering presentations, writing journal articles, and depending on qualification, and preparing proposals. Supervision of staff and students is expected, along with travel to research locations or conferences, overnight travel, and field data collection. Continued employment in this position is contingent upon availability of funding and satisfactory performance. Other duties will be performed as required. The Roadway Safety Program focuses on roadway design safety, strongly emphasizing data collection and analytics using statistical, spatial, and econometric models and machine learning tools. Traditionally, projects in this program have focused on developing crash modification factors (CMFs) and safety performance functions, safety effects of pavement marking and markers, and work zone CMFs. Recently, the program has been involved in addressing safety impacts of automated vehicles, vulnerable road user safety, effects of roadway and roadside designs and operations on crash frequency and severity among others. Essential Duties + Conduct research through data collection, analysis, coordination, and supervision: Plan, schedule, coordinate, and report detailed phases of research and development projects. Evaluate and document data collection requirements and activities. Coordinate data gathering activities and gather data needed for research tasks. Assemble, organize, document, and archive datasets. Synthesize data and extract meaningful statistics and trends. Develop and/or run software and hardware applications. Analyze and develop potential new techniques, policies, procedures, and recommendations. Conduct the necessary literature review and background information search to support techniques and methodologies used, as well as document past research for reporting purposes. 30% + Report preparation: Compile, document, and present results in formats required for inclusion in reports, technical memoranda, and presentations. Prepare technical documentation, including literature reviews, data collection, analysis, and summaries. Prepare project reports and other deliverables as required. Prepare materials for presentation of research results and other deliverables at technical meetings or other venues and to sponsors. 30% + Project management: Manage, communicate, and coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams comprising research staff, graduate and undergraduate students, and support staff to ensure the completion of research objectives and timely delivery of high-quality project deliverables. 20% + Proposal preparation: Actively seek and obtain externally funded research projects, performing work on basic and applied technology problems, and participate in research proposals serving as Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI, or contribute as a significant lead in the proposal. 10% + Research presentations: Prepare and give presentations to existing and potential sponsors, academic settings, or conference settings. Prepare, schedule, conduct, and document research meetings. 5% + Interact with sponsors and potential clients. 4% + Other duties as assigned. 1% Required Education and Experience + Master’s Degree in Engineering or related fields. + 3 years related work experience. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities + Experience with developing traffic safety models and conducting exploratory and predictive analysis of crash data. + Demonstrated understanding of research methods and data analysis techniques. + Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. + Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, R, Python, ArcGIS and other data management and analysis tools and software. + Ability to multi-task, be flexible, and exhibit a positive attitude in the workplace. + Demonstrates a high degree of technical competence. Preferred Qualifications + PhD in Engineering or related field. + Ability to use surrogates as a measure of road safety. + Experience in Safe Systems approach and Complete Streets projects. + Experience with connected and automated vehicles and how they impact safety. + Previous experience in data mining with machine learning algorithms. + Proficient with Azure cloud computing environment and Tableau. + Publications in related field. + Valid driver’s license.
