Description of Job About the Work Unit The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is responsible for operating and maintaining the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel (EJMT), which traverses the Continental Divide, with Clear Creek County on the east and Summit County on the west. The Special Crew Unit maintains and repairs the tunnel facility’s electrical and mechanical equipment, consisting of a complex 25,000 volt electrical system, two 500kw generators, circuit breakers, contactors, relays, overloads, meters, regulating equipment, high voltage transformers, high voltage switchgear and related control systems, and complex lighting systems. The unit also services and repairs the 56 dual speed motors, ranging from 12.5 to 600 HP and 28 ventilation fans with an air flow capacity of 500,000 CFM, as well as starters, control relays, bearings, alignment of fan and motor shafts, adjustment of fan dampers, correct phasing, and meggar testing. The Special Crew Unit responds to emergencies including, but not limited to, stalled vehicles, accidents, fires, power outages, and medical assists; assists with Continuous Flow Metering (CFM); and takes snow removal shifts as plow drivers and traffic control during Avalanche missions. Information about the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel can be found at:www.codot.gov/travel/eisenhower-tunnel/description.html About the Position CDOT has an opening for a Tunnel Facilities Trade Worker I, which assists with providing electrical/mechanical work on the tunnel’s electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems, including equipment and controls associated with tunnel operation, electrical regulating and controlling equipment, fresh water and sewage systems, building heating and air conditioning systems, and tunnel ventilation systems. The Tunnel Facilities Trades Worker I position provides an opportunity for successful candidates to learn and practice various skilled trades, such as electrical, mechanical, and plumbing. There is also the opportunity to become an electrical apprentice under the supervision of a licensed Master Electrician. Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following: + Assist in maintaining, installing, repairing, and adjusting building heating systems, including hydronic, forced air, gas fired boiler, electrical baseboard, and gas fired radiant bay heaters. + Under direction of the licensed electrician, assist in performing electrical services on equipment within the tunnel structure, including two 24,900V substations, two 500KW AC emergency generators, two 150V DC backup control systems, transformers (high voltage oil and low voltage dry type), high voltage switching equipment, electrical discharge lighting systems, elevators, complex heat tape network, and tunnel lighting system. + Assist in maintaining, installing, repairing, and adjusting water sewage, potable water distribution, and fire protection distribution systems, including valves, pumps, filters, chlorinators, hydrants, 8” pipe, and an elaborate heat tape network. + Assist in maintaining, installing, repairing, and adjusting 56 dual speed motors ranging from 12.5 to 600 horsepower, including all drive components and 28 ventilation fans with an air flow capacity of 500 Cubic Feet per Meter (CFM). + Safely drive and operate a variety of equipment; assist with operating and maintaining equipment such as: tandem truck, loader, backhoe, motor grader, sweeper, wrecker, pumper/rescue truck, aerial device, forklift; ensure equipment is in safe operating condition. + Respond to tunnel and area vehicle fires utilizing firefighting equipment and firefighting PPE. + Participate in tunnel maintenance projects; learn to inspect contractor’s work performed and test installed equipment. + Complete work orders and prepare documents pertinent to cost estimates, materials, and parts inventories. + Attend safety meetings and training to include fire response, and hazardous material training. + Maintain constant awareness of hazards and risks, with safety being at the forefront of activities; perform daily safety checks. + Learn safety procedures and guidance materials. + Assist with snow plowing and traffic control during large winter/snow events. + Other job duties as assigned.
