The Academic Achievement Center supports the needs of students as they persist towards an undergraduate degree and develop into life-long learners.
Complementing the efforts of the teaching faculty, students are served through a personalized and structured approach that includes tutoring, supplemental instruction, academic skill development, and outreach workshops on learning skills. The Academic Achievement Center partners with faculty, staff, and administrators in upholding the mission, standards, and requirements of the University.
We offer a diverse environment that is respectful, nurturing, and challenging for all students and staff. While supporting our students’ development, this position is also intended to provide an invaluable educational component to the Graduate Assistant as well.
Position:
The AAC includes professional staff, graduate assistants, and undergraduate students who work collaboratively to accomplish division and office goals. In this position, the Graduate Assistant will be supervised by Erin Morrison, Assistant Director for Academic Excellence.
Graduate Assistant Responsibilities: Undergo training by the AAC staff. Develop an understanding of, and competency in, administrative procedures, tutoring training topics, various academic skills, and supporting tutors. Facilitate at least one weekly tutor training each semester. Help prepare training material. Provide support, training and encouragement to tutors Assist supervisor with recruitment, hiring, and onboarding tutors. Assist students with signing up for tutoring or any tutoring questions Assist professional staff with outreach to students Assist supervisor with observations of tutors and lead feedback meetings with tutors. Represent the Academic Achievement Center in a professional and positive light. Assist in outreach projects such as classroom presentations, and faculty presentations. Refer students to appropriate campus services when possible and/or necessary. Meet weekly with the supervisor to discuss projects and updates. Collaborate with Erin and Lead Tutors to ensure smooth operation throughout the semester Other duties as assigned
Time Commitment:
20 hours/week during office hours (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.) for the entirety of the semester. Specific hours will be determined in cooperation with the position’s supervisor based on office needs. Some limited evening and weekend work may be required.
Compensation:
Students are compensated $15,000 for the academic year; the Academic Achievement Center does not provide tuition waivers.
Skills and Qualifications: Strong academic performance. Attention to detail. Ability to interact with undergraduate students in a professional and personable manner. Interest in learning new information and skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Large- and small-group public speaking and presentation development. Moderate computer ability. Training is provided, but a basic understanding of computers and Google suite is necessary. Experience with Canvas and/or Qualtrics is preferred but not required. Ability to maintain a weekly work schedule, arrive to work on time and complete all tasks on deadline. Strong time management skills. Ability to work well independently and as part of a team Ability to be flexible in a fast-paced and ever-changing higher education environment. Supervision and/or previous tutoring experience preferred but not required.
Minimum Qualifications To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:
• Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
• Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
• Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
• Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S. Additional Minimum Qualifications Strong attention to detail Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize effectively Ability to interact with undergraduate students in a professional and personable manner Excellent oral and written communication skills Comfort with public speaking and presentation development Strong time management and organizational skills Passion for learning and helping others to learn Moderate computer ability Familiarity with Canvas, Canva, TracCloud, and Microsoft Suite or interest in learning these tools Past tutoring experience (formal tutoring position, or informally helping classmates or friends to learn) Interest in academic support

The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student’s field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.
