ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGIST

JOB SUMMARY



Job Summary:

The US technologist performs independently and with self-initiative under indirect supervision. They are required to perform a variety of duties within their realm of knowledge and training to produce diagnostic ultrasound images at a technical level maintaining a high standard of patient care and confidentiality.

Qualifications:

Education: Completion of an AMA approved radiology program.

Licensure: Current Mississippi State Board of Health Medical Radiation Technologist license
Registered Technologist (R.T.) under the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT)
Prefer US registered

Certification: Current CPR/BLS certification

Duties and responsibilities:

The US technologist is expected to practice safe procedures and adhere to safety measures at all times. Specific duties may include but are not limited to:

 Performing ordered exams per department and SCRMC policy and procedure.
 Verifying physician orders ensuring ordering provider, exam, and diagnosis is appropriate.
 Verifying identity of patient prior to performing exam.
 Practicing and encouraging teamwork within the department, the hospital, physicians and all SCRMC facilities.
 Displaying accountability for tasks assigned to them.
 Assisting radiologists/ physicians as needed.
 Participating in educational opportunities in use of new equipment and/ or procedures.
 Completion of necessary paperwork and/or computer functions.
 Transporting radiology patients as needed.
 Adhering to department and SCRMC policy and procedures and SCRMC Performance Standards.
 Handling of trauma patients according to policy and procedure.
 Evaluation of images for technical quality, correct orientation and patient identification.
 Keeping area clean, neat, safe and stocked with needed supplies.
 Adhering to safety and infection control policies.
 Instructs and evaluates student radiographers.


 Assists in training of new employees and cross-training
 Assisting in all areas of the department as needed.
 Reporting outcome of duties to radiology supervisor or team leader.
 Participating in Quality Improvement.
 Displaying proficiency in operation of the US equipment
 Explains procedure and availability of report to patient.
 Assists radiologists in the performance of exams.
 Assists in scheduling of US exams.

Essential Functions:

 Demonstrate an understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology and medical terminology as related to their modality.
 Maintain a high degree of accuracy in positioning and imaging parameters.
 Use professional and ethical judgement and critical thinking when performing their duties.
 Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
 Participates in continuing education and learning experiences to enhance and maintain current knowledge and skills for continued competence.
 Ability to work as a team member.
 Skilled in the operation of US imaging equipment.
 Attention to detail.
 Basic understanding of computer technology.
 Perform all duties using proper body mechanics
 Frequently move/lift patients and equipment, depending on assignment requirements.
 Stand for long periods with frequent squatting, twisting, bending, kneeling and reaching to prepare equipment, materials or objects in order to provide patient care or maintain the patient environment
 Manual dexterity and fine motor coordination.
 Ability to work in a stressful environment.
 Ability to follow directions/instructions from his/her supervisor.
 Consistent attendance is required to assure that the client facilities’ needs and patient needs are met.
 To comply with all of the facilities’ policies, procedures and practices.










Working conditions:

The US technologist must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to inside environmental conditions, such as radiation, noise, infectious/communicable diseases, blood and blood borne diseases, chemicals and/or chemical fumes, odors, gases and dusts. Frequent exposures to distressed patients, families or visitors.

Schedules:

Dependent on the position available for hire, possible schedules may include but are not limited to:

• 8-11 hour day shifts
• 12 hour night shifts
• Rotating shifts to include weekends and holidays
