Job Description

Job Title: Unit Manager (RN)

Reports To: Director of Nursing

Status: Exempt

Positions Summary:

The Unit Manager is responsible for the 24 hours a day, seven days a week management of a nursing unit. Responsibilities include the planning, assignments, implementations and evaluations of direct resident care on unit including the training and supervision of staff, communication with physicians, family members and staff.Ensures compliance with all applicable regulations governing Long Term Care facility operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Provides leadership and direction for the delivery of nursing care by Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), Nursing Assistants for their assigned unit.

Demonstrates the ability to utilize effective communications in interpersonal techniques/strategies with healthcare team members in dealing with issues concerning staff performance, patient care and family concerns.

Establishes and implements action plans to ensure the attainment of the department’s goals and objectives. Effectively collaborates with the medical staff and all departments in planning for the total needs of residents.

Ensures compliance with applicable State and Federal standards and regulations for long-term care and initiates action plans to correct deficiencies in advance of the annual inspections by the PA Dept of Health.

Ensures that individual care plans are instituted and updated according to regulatory requirements through observation and report from charge nurse.

Develops CNA work assignments and staffing schedules to ensure staffing levels are adequate to provide a high level of care.

Maintains continuity of nursing care during shift transitions, receives and provides reports (both verbal and written) to nursing staff and management.

Ensures that staff complete all assignments, promptly report changes in resident conditions, appropriately perform required documentation, and comply with all established policies and procedures of the facility and the Nursing Department.

Develops preliminary and comprehensive assessments as well as written care plans.

Collects, maintains and develops reports regarding medication errors and implements corrective action as necessary. Prepares monthly reports for various committees and DON.

Strictly adheres to infection control and safety rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Manages and coordinates other related nursing management responsibilities as necessary. Manages and coordinates the planning, initiation and completion of special projects as required. Remains flexible and adaptable in work schedules and work assignments as defined by departmental goals and facility needs.

Assures that call all call bells are answered promptly, meeting all residents’ needs in a timely manner.

Maintains the confidentiality of all resident care information, including protected health information in accordance with HIPAA and other federal and state regulations.

Performs all tasks and duties in an efficient and safe manner.

Performs other related duties as assigned or as necessary. Remains flexible and adaptable in work schedules and work assignments as defined by departmental and facility needs.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND/ OR EXPERIENCE

3-5 years’ experience in Long Term Care required.

1-3 years previous supervisory experience in long term care preferred.

Knowledge of clinical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations and guidelines that pertain to long term care.

Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, governmental agencies and then general public.

Must be able to effectively communicate with older adults in a manner that conveys warmth and professionalism.

Must have an LPN/RN license in the State of Maryland
