Unit Secretary

Position Summary

Meets the communication needs of the patient/family, departmental staff and medical staff.  Demonstrates basic computer knowledge.  Able to answer phone, patient call light system, order entry, and organize desk to prepare and compile information in the patient chart every shift.  Maintains regulatory agency requirements, nursing and hospital policies, procedures and standards.  Demonstrates performance consistent with the mission, vision and goals of the unit and organization; remains flexible to changing systems; is expected to demonstrate quality and effectiveness in work habits; and treats staff, physicians, patients and families with consideration and respect. Performs all clerical and secretarial duties related to unit under supervision of Nurse Manager or Charge Nurse.  Communicates with physicians and nurses and relays pertinent information in timely manner.  Is responsible for scheduling x-rays, lab tests, surgeries, etc. as ordered by physicians.

Qualifications

Completion of high school diploma or equivalent.  Must be able to work under the direction of a licensed nurse; and follow written or verbal instructions effectively.  Demonstrates good writing or verbal communication skills.  Follows directions without difficulty. Computer skills required, typing skills preferred but not required Some college preferred but not required.
