The Institute for Geophysics at The University of Texas at Austin (UTIG) invites applications for Co-Director of the Gulf Basin Depositional Synthesis Program (GBDS).  

 

The Co-Director will be Co-Principal Investigator (PI) for the Gulf Basins Depositional Synthesis (GBDS) Industrial Affiliates Program (IAP), an energy industry funded research consortium. Since its founding 30 years ago by Dr. William Galloway and Dr. Richard Buffler, GBDS has made significant contributions to understanding the stratigraphic evolution of the Gulf of Mexico Basin and its energy potential. Leveraging its data and understanding GBDS is well positioned to play an important role in the energy transition. Moreover, the wealth of data possessed by GBDS creates the opportunity to explore a range of geoscience research topics and to work collaboratively with other units in the Jackson School. The Co-Director will set the future research goals for GBDS to help it maintain relevance to the energy industry.

The successful applicant will serve as the GBDS Co-Director. Depending on qualifications and experience, the successful candidate may be appointed as a Research Scientist or Research Faculty.  The GBDS program provides six months of salary support annually. Candidates will be eligible to pursue additional extramural funding through research proposals.

UTIG is one of the three research units of the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin, known for research excellence, integrative science, and international field programs in geophysics (solid earth, marine, polar), climate science, planetary science, energy geoscience, and computational and experimental geophysics (ig.utexas.edu/research/).

Responsibilities

The Co-Director will take responsibility for the overall design and conduct of the research, oversee assigned project personnel, and coordinate administrative and marketing activities for the program.

Work with the GBDS team to generate support from industry and governmental sponsors to explore broad research topics of mutual interest in the Gulf of Mexico.

Conduct research activities, including 1) update existing GBDS maps and interpretations with newly released well and seismic data; 2) improve onshore well database allowing enhanced integration with CCUS, geothermal, hydrogen storage and critical mineral regional and site-specific evaluations; 3) create reports and present results of research to GBDS Industrial Affiliates; and 4) mentor GBDS students and postdoctoral fellows in seismic stratigraphic interpretation, sequence stratigraphy, and reservoir connectivity methods.

Publish and present work as part of GBDS goals and interests.

Oversee publication of biennial project plans and reports to consortium members.

 Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in Geosciences preferably in sedimentary geology

10+ years of energy industry experience

Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals 

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of the Gulf of Mexico Basin

Strong network of professional contacts in the energy industry

Experience with seismic and well log interpretation

Salary Range

$130,000+ depending upon qualifications
