About the Role:

As a Utility Billing Specialist, you perform a critical role in ensuring our customers’ bills are accurate and timely by investigating and resolving complex billing issues, liaising with internal teams and external stakeholders, and improving our business processes. 

 

What You Get to Do:

Resolve complicated exceptions by investigating system-triggered usage and billing exceptions that prevent accounts from being billed accurately or on time. Exceptions span the entire utility meter to cash process, from meter data collection to billing calculation, tariff billing and market transactions. Identify, investigate and escalate any issues where the billing system or interfaces to other utility systems are not behaving as expected. Support the Business Support Team by providing guidance and assistance on billing processes, tariff billing rules and market transactions. Analyze system data to quantify the scope and scale of billing issues and clearly describe the impact of issues on customers and on the business. Take the lead on requesting specific data queries to support the impact analysis. Continually improve performance by reviewing customer care and billing processes and system configurations and recommend alternatives to improve quality, reduce failures and improve customer service. Update and correct a wide variety of customer, site and billing information in the billing system including delegating work to team members and performing quality assurance, and dealing with sensitive key accounts. Support members of the billing team on completing billing exceptions accurately and on time. Respond to requests for assistance from internal work groups who require guidance or advice on billing processes from end to end, tariffs or market transactions. Perform quality assurance on billing processes and work queues.  Respond to and manage requests from Retailers and inquiries from the Alberta Utilities Commission and other external parties. Support the Supervisor in preparing and reviewing monthly regulatory reporting and internal performance reporting. Support change management processes including executing UAT scripts when required, and supporting others with new functionality from quarterly system releases. Act as the subject matter expert when supporting audit processes by providing guidance on billing processes, describing data on system reports, regulatory requirements and system

 

What You Bring: 

Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in a related discipline (Business Administration, Information Technology, Computing Science, Accounting).  Minimum 5 years’ related experience, preferably in a utility customer service and billing role. Experience with back-office business processes in a vertically integrated utility an asset. Familiarity with Oracle (CCS, C2M or CC&B) or another cloud-based billing system would be an asset Demonstrated knowledge of Alberta Utilities Commission Rules and Codes governing distribution utilities in Alberta. Demonstrated understanding of the electric utility industry and relevant regulatory requirements, including market rules, tariff billing, and Alberta’s deregulated energy market.  Experience working within complex IT environments and utility IT systems. Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret complex data.  Superior organizational and time management skills to manage numerous projects and competing demands. Proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to provide training and guidance to coworkers. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate issues and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Proven ability to take initiative and work independently.  Strong commitment to providing excellent customer service.
