Utility Designator
Job Summary:The Utility Designator is responsible for accurately identifying, locating, and marking underground utilities such as water, gas, electric, telecommunications, and sewer lines. This position ensures the safety of excavation sites by preventing damage to these utilities, thereby protecting public safety and reducing costs associated with utility repairs.
Key Responsibilities:Utility Detection and Marking:Conduct surveys to detect and identify underground utilities using electronic locating equipment.Mark utilities on the ground surface with appropriate paint or flags to indicate their presence.Data Collection and Reporting:Collect and document data on utility locations, including GPS coordinates and other pertinent information.Prepare detailed reports and sketches of utility locations for project planning and record-keeping.Safety Compliance:Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and procedures related to utility detection and excavation.Identify and report potential hazards or issues that may compromise safety or project integrity.Collaboration and Communication:Communicate effectively with contractors, project managers, and other stakeholders to provide clear information about utility locations.Work collaboratively with other team members to coordinate utility locating activities.Equipment Maintenance:Maintain and calibrate utility detection equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.Troubleshoot and resolve minor equipment issues as they arise.Regulatory Adherence:Stay updated on local, state, and federal regulations regarding utility locating and excavation.Ensure all activities adhere to the relevant guidelines and standards.Customer Interaction:Interact professionally with clients and property owners to explain the utility locating process and address any concerns.Provide guidance on best practices for safe digging and excavation.
Qualifications:Education:High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or certification in utility locating is preferred.Experience:Minimum of 2 years of experience in utility locating or a related field.Familiarity with various types of utility detection equipment and technology.Skills:Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Proficient in using mapping software and GPS technology.Licenses and Certifications:Valid driver’s license.Certification from recognized utility locating programs (e.g., NULCA) is advantageous.Physical Requirements:Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.Physical stamina to walk, stand, and carry equipment for extended periods.
Work Environment:Primarily outdoor work at various construction and excavation sites.Exposure to varying weather conditions and potential hazards associated with underground utilities.
