Position SummaryThe Utilities Supervisor oversees the operation, maintenance, and compliance of critical utility systems, including ammonia refrigeration, boilers, compressed air, and a Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF)/wastewater treatment plant. This position is responsible for ensuring all systems operate efficiently, safely, and in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. The Utilities Supervisor leads a team of technicians, drives continuous improvement initiatives, and ensures the uninterrupted supply of utilities critical to the food manufacturing process.Position Responsibilities may include, but not limited to
+ Manage operation and maintenance of industrial ammonia refrigeration systems to ensure optimal cooling performance and compliance with OSHA's Process Safety Management (PSM) standards and EPA's Risk Management Plan (RMP) requirements
+ Conduct leak detection monitoring and maintain compliance with IIAR (International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration) standards
+ Oversee steam generation equipment, including high-pressure boilers, to ensure efficient performance and compliance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code
+ Schedule and oversee regular inspections and ensure adherence to boiler safety and emissions regulations
+ Supervise operation of the Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) system and other wastewater treatment equipment to ensure compliance with environmental permits and discharge limits (EPA Clean Water Act requirements)
+ Monitor effluent quality, chemical usage, and sludge disposal processes to optimize treatment efficiency
+ Oversee operation and maintenance of compressed air systems to ensure consistent supply for manufacturing processes and compliance with OSHA standards
+ Maintain compliance with all applicable regulations, including: PSM and RMP for ammonia systems; Clean Air Act and local emissions standards for boilers and refrigeration systems; Clean Water Act and wastewater discharge permits for DAF systems
+ Conduct regular inspections, audits, and training to ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and food safety standards (e.g., HACCP, SQF, BRC)
+ Develop, update, and manage documentation such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), mechanical integrity records, and regulatory reports
+ Develop and execute preventive and predictive maintenance programs for all utility systems, leveraging CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems)
+ Coordinate system upgrades, repairs, and capital improvement projects to minimize downtime and improve utility system performance
+ Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues promptly, reducing impact on production
+ Lead and develop a team of utility technicians, providing hands-on training and performance management
+ Promote a safety-first culture by ensuring adherence to safety procedures, conducting safety drills, and facilitating ongoing education programs
+ Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align utility operations with production goals and quality standards
+ Monitor and optimize energy usage for utility systems to improve plant efficiency and reduce costs
+ Implement energy-saving initiatives, such as heat recovery systems, to support corporate sustainability goals
+ Prepare and present utility performance metrics, energy reports, and recommendations for process improvements
Required Skills and Experience
+ 5+ years of experience in utilities systems management, including ammonia refrigeration, boilers, and wastewater treatment, preferably in a food manufacturing environment
+ 2+ years of supervisory experience in a technical or manufacturing setting
+ Ammonia Refrigeration: Expertise in managing ammonia systems, including knowledge of PSM, RMP, and IIAR standards
+ Boilers: Familiarity with high-pressure steam systems, boiler safety, and emissions regulations (e.g., NOx limits)
+ DAF/Wastewater: Understanding of wastewater treatment principles, including chemical dosing, pH adjustment, and sludge handling
+ Regulatory Knowledge of the following: OSHA (PSM, hazardous materials), EPA (Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RMP compliance), and Local and state environmental and safety codes
+ Maintenance Technology: Proficient in CMMS for maintenance tracking and scheduling
+ Strong understanding of instrumentation and control systems for utilities operations
+ Leadership and team-building skills to manage and develop technical staff
+ Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
+ Effective communication and cross-functional collaboration
+ Work involves exposure to noisy, hot, or cold environments with potential contact with hazardous chemicals (e.g., ammonia)Must be available for on-call emergencies and flexible scheduling to support 24/7 operations
Preferred Skills and Experience
+ Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Maintenance, Environmental Engineering, or a related field
+ Utilities systems management experience in a manufacturing environment
Physical Requirements
+ Regularly required to use hands to feel, grab, or operate objects, tools, and controls while reaching with hands and arms
+ Frequently required to stand, communicate, and listen
+ Occasionally required to walk, stoop, kneel or crouch
+ Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
+ Visual perception to perform job including peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
+ Able to perform repetitive movements
+ Able to work in variable temperatures (cold/hot)
