Utility Systems Repairer-Operator
Summary This position is located at the Veterans Administration Hudson Valley Health Care System, Engineering Service. The incumbent may be required to work at any of the HVHC Systems facilities. Responsibilities Duties include but not limited to: The Utilities System Repairer Operator shall be responsible for, operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, installing and modifying complex boilers and ancillary equipment. The central boiler plant consists of 4 multi-fuel water tube and 3 fire tube high pressure boilers ranging from 200 H.P. -900 H.P. The boiler plant is controlled and monitored by a highly complex DDC computerized burner management and monitoring system. The incumbent operates, maintains and modifies to optimize efficiency and energy­-savings, while maintaining safety & environmental functions at proper levels for patient care and other facility operations. The incumbent shall be responsible for operation, preventive maintenance, testing and calibrating of highly complex boiler control. Work shall involve the full range of duties required to operate one or more utility systems of extremely large capacity and flexibility such as multi-fuel boilers that have output ranges of 7,500 to 100,000 pounds of steam per hour. This includes lighting off, monitoring, controlling, securing and maintaining these power boilers and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment. Incumbent shall operate dampers, induced and forced draft fans, heat exchangers, fuel pumps, air heaters, condensate and boiler water feed pumps, fuel pressure controls, valves, strainers, relief valves which have a variety of components, controls, gauges and auxiliary equipment to coordinate and monitor a variety of specialized work activities with diverse requirements. Checks and adjusts controls, starts, stops, regulates equipment, resets temperature, air, steam and burner management controls and ensures proper operation. Takes and records operational readings of all associated systems. Perform other duties as assigned. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: This position requires the incumbent to be physically fit to be able to perform the rigors of the job. The incumbent must pass a yearly fitness for duty physical (including respiratory fit testing) and is subject to random testing for use of illegal substances. Frequently required to carry, lift and set up equipment that weigh more than 50 pounds. Work in confined areas in and around boilers and support equipment (i.e., auxiliary and pollution control equipment). Hoists, holders, and pulley are operated. The incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, genie lifts and aerial lifts when appropriate. Frequently performs work where the parts of systems worked on are in hard-to-reach places; therefore, frequent stretching, bending, and kneeling for long periods of time are required.
