For more information, visit amwater.com and join American Water on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. _ *Primary Role*_ Utility Workers are responsible for installing, inspecting, sampling, maintenance, and repair activities in and on facilities and equipment in the Field Services system, and overseeing the performance of the same. Responsible to uphold all Company policies and procedures relative to safety and act in a professional manner to reduce the exposure of hazards to employees, customers, contractors, and themselves. _ *Key Accountabilities*_ _*Safety*_ * General Knowledge of safe practices for operation and maintenance of underground utilities, including worksite safety. * Use safe working practices in the performance of duties and ensure that proper safety practices are used by all workers, including stopping all work, if necessary, to maintain a safe working environment. * Identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings, or working conditions which may be unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employees. * Take prompt corrective measures to eliminate hazards. * _ *Trust*_ * Complete all forms, timesheets, inspection sheets and other documents as required by the Company or governing board(s) or committee(s). * Communicate with customers on site and with coworkers to satisfy customer requests or inquiries. * Establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, employees and the public. * Work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime. * Maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance. _ *Environmental Leadership *_ * Perform sanitation procedures in accordance with American Water, AWWA and/or governmental requirements. Dechlorinate water used in sanitation prior to discharge to streets, streams, ditches or other areas. * Repair and/or replace water mains and services of varying materials in accordance with safe working procedures established for the same. _ *Teamwork*_ * Train with Utility Workers, Senior Utility Workers and Equipment Operators * Assist with major equipment maintenance and repairs as assigned. * Assist in the Installation and maintenance of water mains, hydrants, valves, services and other Field Services apparatuses. _ *High Performance*_ * Operate heavy equipment, machinery, and specialized equipment used in the operation and maintenance of the water system, including but not limited to: mini-hoes (or equivalent), forklifts and fork trucks, dump trucks, utility and pickup trucks, skid-steer vehicles, off-road vehicles, soil compaction machines, valve operators, and other equipment necessary for Field Services work. * Install, test, inspect and maintain Field Services apparatuses, including, but not limited to, water mains, hydrants, valves, services, curb stops, in accordance with American Water, AWWA and/or governmental standards. * Perform routine and preventive maintenance of vehicles, tools, and equipment. * General mechanical and plumbing repair and diagnosis. * Turn main line and/or service line valves to close or open water flow through pipelines or services. Disconnect water pipe and connects water meter to outlet and inlet pipe unions. * Utilize laptop and desktop computers, smart phones, tablets and/or other handheld devices to enter data, complete orders, compute and enter timesheets, and other duties as required and assigned. * Perform other duties as required _ *Knowledge/Skills*_ * General computer skills, including desktop and laptop computers, smart phones, tablets, and/or other handheld devices * Reading and comprehending maps, diagrams, practices, regulations/policies, and environmental standards and compliance requirements. _ *Experience/Education*_ * High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED). * Two (2) years of experience in potable water utility work. _ *Certifications/Licenses*_ * Valid Driver’s License and ability to pass motor vehicle background check. * DOT Medical Card or the ability to obtain. _ *Work Environment*_ * Incumbents may be required to work overtime, weekends, and holidays; in all weather conditions; under hazardous conditions; on congested roadways, obstructed roads, high structures; around operating equipment; in a noisy environment; with and around chemicals; and with the physical ability and stamina to perform strenuous physical work associated with water utility installation and maintenance work. * Incumbents will be authorized to take prompt, corrective actions to eliminate hazards. * Most work will be performed outdoors. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, body fluids, chemicals, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions and intense noises. * Heavy Work: exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. * Position requires standing, walking, use of hands to handle, grip, or control, reaches, stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls.
