UX Designer

Key Responsibilities

The UX Designer is a key participant in the design process that shapes digital products, enabling end users to interact with interfaces more effectively. This involves the process of visualizing and integrating the product, including aspects of branding, GUI design, usability, and end user functionality. The UX designer utilizes user research and workflow analysis to generate use cases that define user experience solutions.  

The UX Designer works in partnership with a UX Tech Lead, who is a Software Developer who helps define the UX for product features and who helps translate the UX process into front-end code. 

UX designers need to possess strong creative and technical problem-solving skills. At Applied Materials UX Designers participate in both sides of user experience design – helping define the user experience objectives through research and documentation, as well as visual interaction design through screen layout, prototyping and graphic design. The UX Designer final deliverables are pixel-perfect screen layouts, clickable prototypes, design standards and occasionally some CSS styling.  

UX designers are expected to be self-directed, but also collaborative. They must possess communication, time-management, and process-management skills. Creativity, passion, and attention to detail are also keys to success in this role.

UX Designers are typically required to have a bachelor's degree in visual design, communications, computer science or HCI and end user psychology. Previous Web Design or UX Design experience is required, ideally in a technology-heavy industry. Applied Materials UX Designers are expected to grasp user needs in advanced technology markets like Semiconductor and Pharmaceutical manufacturing and production. 

The candidate will need to provide a URL link to their online portfolio with UX Design samples and a strong body of work for technology clients.  

Primary Roles 

Consulting with clients and Product Owners to understand product goals and interpreting user research results 

Conducting user research and usability testing with end users in monitored sessions 

Creating wireframes, storyboards, sitemaps, and screen flows  

Designing screen layouts in Figma 

Prototyping product UX in Figma clickable demos 

Analyzing user feedback and activity, and iterating to enhance the user experience 

Must have a solid understanding of graphic design and web/Mobile technologies, and of wireframing tools such as Axure RP, Pencil or Balsamiq  

Must possess demonstratable skills with screen layout design programs and tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe XD, and Figma 

UX designers must have the ability to quickly adapt to modern technologies and a willingness to keep their skills and industry knowledge current  

Provide design guidance and mentorship to Intern or Junior UX Designers and Software Engineers who are learning the UX Design processes 

Performs as an individual contributor on products and contributes to developing Design Standards on documentation websites 

May be required to edit front-end style sheets and visual mark-up alongside FE Software Engineers (not solo) 

Ensures all product experiences are designed with the end-user and business objectives in mind, while leveraging AMATs brand and design standards 

Updates daily progress via online reporting and task completion via Agile project management systems 

Applies User Research processes to conduct usability validation and A/B Testing 

Works alongside UX Tech Leads to translate project requirements into visual designs and manages the refinement of those designs through to customer delivery via user testing 

Participates in daily Agile scrums to iterate in design sprints to meet time, budget and quality goals set by UX Design managers 

  

UX Management Reporting and Accountability 

The UX Designer reports to the UX Project Manager for scheduling, Agile management resource allocation and project planning of UX resources 

The UX Designer reports to the UX Design Manager for creative and visual quality, and excellence in delivering top-tier user experience solutions 

The UX Designer will account to the UX Design Manager for adherence to Applied’s UX Design Standards 

They will collaborate with and take software functionality guidance from UX Tech Leads in translating requirements into use cases for GUI and user experience solutions 

Must possess the ability to work effectively in a team setting including synthesizing abstract ideas into concrete design visualizations 

Must be capable of collaborating and communicating closely with teams and other stakeholders via remote meetings in US time zones for 2 hours per day, to consistently deliver design solutions for approval 

Must be open to receiving feedback and constructive criticism, and must embrace change 

Will be expected to interface with software development version control systems and graphic library archiving in a responsible manner - to maintain centralized source code and design assets
