Union Tank Car Company is seeking a Valve Shop Repair Supervisor on first shift to oversee our Valve department in our Muscatine, Iowa location.

Job Description

This position reports to the Repair Manager. Following UTC procedures, the incumbent supervises the activities of various hourly classifications in many phases of car repair work, ensuring the proper repair of railroad cars received at the shops in a safe, expeditious manner. In this regard, the incumbent ensures all AAR, DOT, and company standards are adhered to during the performance of said repairs. The incumbent is required to select, train, motivate, and discipline his/her direct reports. In addition, interpretation of drawings/blueprints is essential to ensure the proper completion of repair work.

Job Responsibilities

Supervises hourly workforce in the efficient, expeditious repair and maintenance of railroad tank cars and other railroad rolling stockEnsures AAR, DOT, and company quality control standards are adhered to by inspecting all completed workRecords labor hours and material consumption in an accurate, timely mannerAdheres to established production schedules by monitoring work in process and thereby effectively scheduling his/her direct reportsImplements the safety program as established by SOPs, enforces compliance with all safety rules, ensures hazardous conditions are corrected promptly, and works towards eliminating employee injuriesParticipates in and actively supports quality and continuous improvement projects and activities

In order to perform the essential functions of the job, the incumbent must possess, at minimum, the following skills and abilities:

Climb ladders to heights of approximately 14 feet high and bend, stoop, stretch, lift, and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs. to set up tables and/or to attach to tank carsEnter tank cars via a manway opening of approximately 20 inches in diameterBe able to tolerate both heights and confined spacesHave keen visual and audio acuity to recognize various shop danger warning signals to avoid injuries and promote a safe working environmentPossess considerable stamina to perform the essential functions over a large geographical plant areaHave the ability and availability to work considerable overtime hours that may often be requiredBe willing and able to wear safety equipment such as, but not limited to, safety shoes, safety glasses, hard hats, earplugs, and respirators

Education/Experiences/Qualifications

High school diploma or GED is required; bachelor's degree is preferredSupervisory/management experience in a production, service, or manufacturing environment is requiredKnowledge of the Federal Railroad Association's regulations governing the inspection and test of rail cars, and the Association of American Railroads Interchange rules is a plusExperience in rail car inspections, test, and repair, and the ability to read prints and drawings, including weld and nondestructive testing symbols is a plus
