**Summary:**
The Vascular Access Nurse is a Registered Nurse who inserts and monitors PICC, Midlines and ultrasound guided IV's for patients greater than 17 years of age. Acts as a resource to staff regarding vascular access line therapy and IV assessment, products and procedures. Assists with difficult IV access when needed. Monitors post placement (PICC and Midline) care on a regular basis. Regularly rounds on all inpatients with a central line. Assumes responsibility for review and revision of all Nursing Policies and Procedures related to IV Therapy. Participates in performance improvement activities related to vascular access.
**Responsibilities:**
Key customers are patients, physicians, peers, clinical staff, and all other departments. Assures friendly, helpful, and courteous response to all customers. Performs duties and conducts interpersonal relationships in a manner to project a positive image of the department and hospital. Insures that contacts with other health care members is friendly helpful and courteous.

**EDUCATION**
+ Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN preferred. BSN within 3 years of employment required.
**EXPERIENCE**
+ Registered nurse with a minimal of 2 years of experience. Certified in placing Peripherally intravenous central catheters (PICC), midlines, and ultrasound guided IVs. Charge Nurse / Preceptor experience preferred.
**LICENSURE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION**
+ Current licensure to practice as registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina.
+ BLS certification required. ACLS preferred.
+ Specialty certification by Association for Vascular Access (VA-BC) within 3 years of employment.
**OTHER SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS**
+ Ability to demonstrate initiative, teamwork, and flexibility required.
+ Effective communication, both verbally and in writing.
+ Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and coordinate patient care activities.
+ Effective interpersonal, communication and observation skills are essential. Understanding of patient care needs according to developmental stages for various age groups.
+ High level skills in critical thinking and assessment related to vascular access device selection and placement preferred.
**WORK ENVIRONMENT**
+ Exposure to blood borne pathogens, airborne pathogens, and other infectious diseases requiring the use of protective equipment.
+ Possible exposure to other hazards, such as electrical, radiation, toxic waste, chemical hazards based on the departments.
+ Possible exposure to conditions, such as fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
+ Continuous use of medical/clinical equipment such as IV pumps, monitors, ventilators, oxygen tanks, patient beds, etc.
**PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS**
+ Standing, sitting, walking and working throughout the shift. Lifting, pulling, turning and pushing patients daily. Ability to use appropriate Safe-Patient Handling equipment. Visual acuity, auditory and verbal skills necessary. Stressful work periods and rotating shifts.
