Veterinary Technical Lead - Containment (KEY)

The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) is looking for a qualified Veterinary Technical Lead - Containment to support our contract with our government customer at Fort Detrick, Maryland.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide onsite contract management of all veterinary technical and animal husbandry contractor duties and contract personnel. Provide technical support at various levels of biocontainment, including animal biosafety levels (ABSL) 3 and 4, and non-containment as required by mission Ensure contract personnel are trained and perform work IAW local procedures. Track contract personnel training and certification requirements and ensure contractors are prepared for required certification examinations. Provide contractor-led training of supported tasks to staff, contractors, and visiting personnel as requested. Ensure that needed equipment and supplies are available and that needed stock is obtained from various supply locations.  Operate, train and ensure other contract personnel operate medical and research equipment to protect laboratory personnel and other animals from infection by organisms and handling animals by appropriate procedures to protect coworkers from bites and scratches. Check work in progress and when finished for compliance on work sequence, procedures, methods, quality control, and deadlines, and advise other employees to meet deadlines. Responsible for scheduling and providing daily oversight to ensure employees perform to the required standards as defined by USAMRIID SOPs, requirements of the Director, VMD, industry standards IAW applicable laws, other protocol support, and regulations and the Guide for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals are met over weekends, Holidays, Institute stand-downs, inclement weather or other unscheduled military post closure, and any other National emergency.  In the event there is a holiday announced other than recognized, the candidate shall provide sufficient staff to perform essential services. Utilize report for all logistical support required, including animal caging and space requirements to determine the need for additional cages. Screen health reports for positive test results and perform visual inspection of incoming animals. Assists in reviewing SOPs for all functions and activities as performed by Contract personnel. Perform standard veterinary procedures without assistance or supervision, to include but not limited to: administration of medications or other substances by injections, orally, or topically; placing intravenous catheters; incubating; anesthetizing animals using injectable or gas anesthetics; anesthetic monitoring and euthanasia; providing assistance in radiographic and surgical procedures; collection of blood and other bio samples; creating entries in medical records (to include GLP compliant entries); conduct health checks and physical exams; and performance of handling and restraint of animals. Review schedules, and other technical documents and plans, based on scientific data and veterinarian direction; provide daily oversight with coordination from TPOC and/or NCOIC of sections. Independently plan the work and provide the needed Contract personnel and supplies utilizing animal protocol and other guidance information as available. Provide scheduling of other Contract employees to ensure that mission requirements are met over weekends; Holidays, Institute stand downs, inclement weather or other unscheduled military post closure, and any other National emergency. Compile Animal Room Assignment report in the prescribed format and frequency and provide it to the Chief, Husbandry Branch. Assist the Husbandry Branch Chief maintain animal room schedule. Perform routine operator/user-level maintenance and repair carts, rodent racks, etc. including periodic lubrication of casters.  Furnish a written parts and supply requirement list for all equipment parts required or needed for repairs and for parts/supplies needed to maintain stock levels. Maintain and provide minor repairs to the automatic watering and flushing systems; use broken valves and broken sections of supply tubing and/or outdated or malfuntioning filters in the pressure reducing stations will be reported immediately.  Work independently to handle and perform all basic procedures for Old World NHPs, New World NHPs, rodents, ferrets, pigs, rabbits, and rodents. Responsible for various logistical tasks including receipt, storage and maintenance of inventories, an accounting for all logistical supplies, reporting discrepancies of receipt immediately to the TPOC, or Chief, VMD (or designated representative). Provide training to USAMRIID personnel in coordination with the Contract PM, TPOC, and Branch Chief. (or delegated representative) relative to animal health care technical care. Work requires continuous standing and walking on concrete or hard surfaced floors, climbing, working in a bent position and carrying materials up to 75 pounds. Greater strength, effort and agility are required in the handling, capturing, restraining, and providing veterinary technical services to the stronger, more active animals. Variable work hours, to include 24/7 coverage, evenings/nights, weekends, Government holidays, and during unforeseen closures or circumstances shall apply to meet mission requirements. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

HS Diploma LATG certification or higher is required prior to or within twelve (12) months of hire. Forklift certification upon hire or within three (3) months of hire

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum six (6) years’ veterinary technical and/or animal husbandry experience in support of NHPs in a research setting Minimum three (3) years veterinary technical and/or animal husbandry experience in biocontainment 3 and 4 (ABSL 3/4) setting Minimum three (3) years managing personnel Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) experience required Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Experience caring for macaques, African Green monkeys, marmosets, ferrets, rabbits, and rodents challenged with infectious agents in biocontainment level 3 and 4 (BSL 3/4) settings

REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:

Must be a U.S. Citizen Must be able to obtain and maintain an active Secret clearance. Must meet the Controlled Substance Personnel Reliability Program (CS-PRP) requirements in accordance with Army Regulation 190-51, as well as the Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP) and Select Agent requirements in accordance with Army Regulation 190-17.
