Position SummaryUnder general guidance, provides health care to laboratory animals and provides veterinary technical and surgical support to investigators and their research staff.
Job Responsibilities Prepares the operating room for procedures, including preparation and sterilization of surgical instruments and supplies. Administers anesthesia and monitors anesthesia as required. Assists with experimental and surgical procedures, and in pre- and post-operative care of laboratory animals as instructed. Assists with the implementation of preventive health programs. Under minimal supervision, evaluates and assesses common disease conditions and escalates problems as appropriate. Administers clinical treatments, collects diagnostic and environmental samples, and administers euthanasia when necessary. Performs tasks in a manner that is consistent with departmental; institutional; local, state and federal regulations; AAALAC accreditation standards and industry best practices. Reports issues of non-compliance. Maintains electronic and hard copy files and databases. Maintains integrity of information. Maintains and operates the Veterinary Services pharmacy and dispenses supplies, medication and controlled substances to investigators. Maintains records for controlled substances. Education Associate's Degree or equivalent industry-related certification in Veterinary Science, Veterinary Technology, Animal Health or Baccalaureate Degree in Natural Sciences. ExperienceExperience as part of a degree program or 6 months experience working with animals.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written). Licenses and Certifications Veterinary Technician License is preferred. AALAS certification at the ALAT level highly desired. Working Conditions/Physical DemandsThis position requires the occasional lifting of heavy animals (pigs, non-human primates);
Work schedule may include long working days, weekends and holidays;
Must be able to handle fractious animals;
Potential exposure to animal bites and scratches, needles and other sharp instruments, infectious agents, radioisotopes, human xenografts, toxic chemicals and radiation.
Work assignments may require travel to the Burke Rehabilitation Center or MSK facilities
