Vice President, Business Strategy
The Vice President of Business Strategy will lead the development of comprehensive strategies across the Institute, integrating cross-institute initiatives, departments, service lines, disease centers, and business units. Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Business Strategy, this position requires close collaboration with executive leadership, department heads, and key stakeholders to ensure alignment with the Institute’s strategic objectives. The Vice President will focus on strategic planning, business strategy planning, long-range strategies, performance optimization, and performance monitoring. This role integrates strategic planning, performance improvement initiatives and advanced analytics to deliver transformative results. Working strategically with leadership, the Vice President will drive the achievement of organizational goals, fostering innovation, operational improvements, and market expansion while ensuring initiatives deliver measurable value and are in alignment with Dana-Farber’s mission. This role demands a deep understanding of competitive positioning, patient needs, research priorities, and emerging oncology trends, supported by advanced forecasting and data-driven insights to guide long-term sustainable growth and organizational excellence. Spanning clinical, research, and educational domains, the Vice President’s responsibilities are cross-institutional in scope. The Vice President will champion a culture of strategic agility and foster collaboration and innovation, equipping the Institute to adapt effectively to evolving healthcare regulations, technological advancements, and shifting expectations of external stakeholders. At times, the Vice President will be tasked with implementing or overseeing specific strategic initiatives. Combining extremely talented people with the best technologies in a genuinely positive environment, we provide compassionate and comprehensive care to patients of all ages; we conduct research that advances treatment; we educate tomorrow’s physician/researchers; we reach out to underserved members of our community; and we work with amazing partners, including other Harvard Medical School-affiliated hospitals. **Business Strategy Planning and Long-Range Strategies** + Lead the development and execution of business strategies across the Institute’s various departments, service lines, disease centers, and business units. + Collaborate with senior leadership to establish long-range strategies that align with the Institute’s mission and vision. + Guide the strategic planning process, ensuring that all plans are data-driven and aligned with organizational goals. + Support leaders in the development of business plans and strategies that promote sustainable growth and operational excellence. + Transition ownership of strategic initiatives to implementation lead allowing for collaboration and oversight guidance and support while monitoring progress execution and outcomes. **Performance Improvement** + Oversee the identification, implementation and tracking of performance improvement initiatives across the Institute. + Utilize data analytics to identify areas for improvement and track the success of performance initiatives. + Work closely with department leaders to optimize operational efficiency and enhance the quality of care provided to patients. **Central Business Performance Analytics** + In the areas relevant to its scope, oversee the Institute’s central business performance analytics function, including market intelligence, performance tracking/monitoring, and forecasting. + Provide insights and recommendations to senior leadership based on data analysis and forecasting models. + Manage special project analytics in support of business unit growth, including the development of new services or expansion into new markets. + Ensure that all analytics initiatives are aligned with the Institute’s strategic objectives and support informed decision-making **Supervisory Responsibilities** + Lead and manage a team of professionals responsible for business strategy planning, performance improvement, and analytics. + Hire, mentor, and lead team members, ensuring that they are equipped to meet the organization’s strategic goals. + Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, and implement strategies for team success. + Allocate resources effectively to meet project priorities and timelines. + Guides others in organizing work, setting priorities and timelines, and determining and obtaining the resources required to meet those priorities. **Other Responsibilities** + Ensure relevant initiatives are compliant with DFCI policies, procedures, regulatory agency requirements and ensures safe, efficient and effective delivery of quality care, in collaboration with department leaders. + Performs additional duties as assigned. May include travel. **MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:** + BA or BS required; MPH, MBA or master’s degree in health care management or related field preferred + Minimum of 20 years of experience in business strategy, healthcare strategy, business planning within a healthcare provider environment (including related consulting experience). + Experience working in an academic medical center and consulting environment strongly preferred; experience within oncology preferred + Minimum of 8 years supervisory/management experience + Experience working with clinical leaders as partners and advisers + Proven track record in strategic initiatives, planning and business performance analysis and improvement + Extensive experience with data-driven decision-making + Experience in managing diverse teams across multiple locations + Experience in a recognized management consulting firm highly preferred + Strong ethical standards and integrity + High level of emotional intelligence and interpersonal, leadership and team-building skills + Robust professional network in related fields + Knowledge of healthcare regulations, compliance, and accreditation standards + Ability to travel domestically as required (estimated 5-10%) **KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:** + Exceptional communication skills + Ability to converse effectively, prepare written proposals, analyses and other documents. + Proficiency in financial management and understanding of healthcare economics + Exceptional business, financial and analytical acumen. + Maintain extensive knowledge of developments in the health care market in order to assess the position of the Institute and determine how to improve it. + Excellent quantitative, analytic, financial and problem-solving skills to evaluate all aspects of a problem or opportunity and make or facilitate appropriate and timely decisions. + Strong project management and organizational skills, with demonstrated ability to drive multiple concurrent projects to completion in a complex, consensus-oriented environment. + Demonstrated ability to manage, mentor and lead others. + Superior facilitation, communication and customer service skills. + Strong relationship-building skills and ability to foster collaboration and build consensus among diverse groups across all levels of the organization and will external institutions. + Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint; experience with Project, Visio, and various analytics tools preferred. + Deals well with uncertainty and ambiguity; flexible with changes in prioritization within a consensus decision-making environment. + Self-motivated with ability to work independently on new and existing projects. + Strong client/results orientation, and effective teamwork and interpersonal skills. + Maintains balance between attention to detail to ensure high quality deliverables, and ability to think and operate from a broader strategic lens. + Demonstrates self-awareness, strong professionalism, a strong work ethic and the ability to handle difficult situations effectively and efficiently.
