Vice President, Freight Business Unit
Summary/Objective
The Vice President, Freight Business Unit, is responsible for developing and executing the overall strategy to maximize growth and profitability. This role requires strong leadership to oversee day-to-day operations while implementing short- and long-term initiatives that enhance efficiency, customer satisfaction, and financial performance. Reporting directly to the President, the Vice President will provide regular performance reports and strategic recommendations. Essential Functions
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions. Oversee full Profit and Loss (P&L) responsibility for the Freight Business Unit. Develop and implement market, product, and service strategies aligned with business objectives. Drive market share and profitability through in-depth analysis and target setting, including: Profitability analysis of current product lines Customer penetration and profitability evaluation New product/program and market identification Pricing strategy development Expand domestic and international business through growth initiatives, joint ventures, licensing, and partnerships. Establish and refine sales performance metrics and assessment tools. Provide leadership in the development and management of Freight Business Unit teams as part of senior management. Assess and enhance the effectiveness of the sales team and organizational structure. Recruit, train, and develop a high-performing sales team while implementing effective compensation programs. Lead the Sales & Systems Engineering group in executing engineering proposals and solutions. Develop relationships with industry regulatory bodies (e.g., AAR, FRA) and participate in relevant board activities. Establish and manage an efficient execution organization with a focus on project management. Handle government affairs related to products, services, and customer engagements. Strengthen customer relationships with freight-car and locomotive builders, railroads, fleet owners, and operators. Negotiate and finalize key business agreements with customers and partners. Support international affiliates to maximize global sales opportunities. Provide reliable forecasts and models for locomotives, freight cars, and spare parts to inform planning processes. Ensure compliance with all Quality, Product Safety, and Health/Safety/Environmental/Energy policies. Adhere to statutory and regulatory compliance obligations. Support and align with Integrated Management System policies and key performance indicators (KPIs). This position has supervisory responsibilities for a team of fewer than 10 employees. Work Environment
This role primarily operates in an office environment with computer-based work. However, occasional exposure to shop floor conditions (e.g., noise, heat, cold, dust/dirt) may be required. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s Degree required. Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience. Minimum of 10 years of supervisory experience. Preferred Education and Experience Master’s Degree in Engineering or MBA preferred.
