Role Summary

50 South Capital is seeking to add an investment professional in their Chicago headquarters to be part of a growing investment team primarily to source, diligence, execute, and monitor venture capital fund commitments. This individual will have the ability to contribute to investment decision making across all of 50 South Capital’s funds and strategies, including primaries, secondaries, co-investments and private credit. In addition, this individual will be responsible for assisting in fundraising efforts, portfolio monitoring and other special projects. The selected candidate will exhibit strong investment analytics as well as strong interpersonal skills. We are seeking candidates with excellent academic achievements, 4-7 years of relevant industry experience, and advanced skills in investment analytics, business writing, and presenting.

Duties and Responsibilities

Sourcing and reviewing new investment opportunities and assisting in all aspects of the due diligence process for primary fund investments and select secondary investment opportunities.

Communicating thoughts and opinions on firms and companies in a succinct, effective way, including identifying the key strengths and risks for each opportunity, and determining how certain information will be presented.

Participating in the preparation of diligence materials as well as assisting with the creation of Investment Committee Memorandums.

Staying current with the general overall performance of our investments, participating in the creation and presentation of materials for quarterly portfolio reviews.

Working directly with senior venture capital practice leads to develop, maintain, and proactively cover a targeted list of active and prospective fund managers via pipeline management, primary research, and profile building.

Demonstrating accountability, initiative, trustworthiness, teamwork, positive attitude, and thoughtful judgment.

Maintaining an ongoing dialogue and relationship with targeted venture capital firms including attendance in update calls, in-person meetings, and annual meetings. The position requires travel.

Representing 50 South Capital in an exemplary fashion to external industry participants in order to develop the Firm’s brand reputation in the market.

Routinely engaging with new members of the team, namely incoming Summer Interns, Analysts, and other Associates by training, communicating, and being a helpful resource.

Necessary Skills, Experience, and Education

High attention to detail and strong work ethic.

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with venture capital investment professionals, industry contacts, and limited partners.

Strong communication skills, both written and oral.

Highly-developed analytical ability, curiosity, and interest in technology.

Self-starter with the ability to initiate and oversee projects to completion.

Ability to work in a collegial, team-oriented environment while managing multiple projects and prioritizing workflow.

Capacity to present in one-on-one settings and to larger groups.

Strong business and interpersonal judgment skills with ability to assess both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of an investment.

Understanding of how financial markets work, particularly venture capital.

Knowledge of basic financial analysis and the valuation of private companies.

Highly proficient in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Bachelor's degree, with a major in business, finance, accounting, or economics required. MBA preferred.

6-9 years of experience within venture capital, investment banking, consulting, public accounting, or corporate finance.

Salary Range:

$158,010 - 268,640 USD

Salary range is a good faith estimate of base pay. Northern Trust provides a comprehensive benefits package including retirement benefits (401k and pension), health and welfare benefits (medical, dental, vision, spending accounts and disability), paid time off, parental and caregiver leave, life & accident insurance, and other voluntary and well-being benefits. Northern Trust also provides a discretionary bonus program that may include an equity component.
