Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer is primarily responsible for overseeing health care compliance at Dana-Farber and development of a compliance program that ensures compliance with all major laws, regulatory requirements, policies, and procedures relevant to health care providers. As a collaborative compliance leader and subject matter expert, the CCO is responsible for establishing standards and implementing procedures in partnership with leadership, other compliance functions and the business to ensure that the compliance programs throughout the organization are effective and efficient in identifying, preventing, detecting, and correcting noncompliance with applicable policies, laws and regulations.

 

The CCO works with leadership and the business to provide reasonable assurance to senior management and the Board that there are effective and efficient policies and procedures in place, they are well understood and respected by the workforce, and that Dana-Farber is compliant with all health care regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

In collaboration with other compliance professionals, develops and executes the Compliance Plan and Strategy for DFCI.

 

Manages the process by which the Compliance Oversight Committee develops priorities, and monitors compliance effectiveness.

 

Coordinates and facilitates all Compliance Oversight Committee activities including reporting activities of the compliance program to Executive Management and Board level committees, designating compliance managers, monitoring compliance activities, etc.

 

Works with compliance managers to develop compliance policies and procedures, monitoring systems and training programs within their respective areas of responsibility.

 

Manages a team of employees to ensure the success of the Compliance Department.

 

In collaboration with VP Revenue Performance Management, oversees the Director of Billing Compliance, a position tasked with ensuring the Institute meets Federal and State regulatory billing requirements and aligns the Institute with industry and hospital billing compliance standards.

 

Establishes and maintains a strong collaboration with physicians to ensure accurate billing compliance.

 

Oversees the Director of Medication Safety, Quality, and Regulatory Compliance, a role responsible for oversight of the medication use process and ensuring quality, safety and compliance with best medication use practices. 

 

Maintains a system for disclosing and managing conflicts of interest by staff members, in coordination with other conflicts management processes across the organization.

 

Collaborates closely in partnership with the Vice President of Research Integrity to ensure smooth coordination and compliance between the two departments.

 

Maintains an awareness of laws and regulations and keep abreast of changes that may affect the healthcare system. 

 

Develops a system to communicate major new statutory and regulatory requirements to managers and work with them to develop procedures to implement these new requirements.

 

Takes steps to monitor the effectiveness of the Institute’s compliance program and implement changes when necessary.

 

Manages the Compliance Line and ensure reports are properly responded to in a timely fashion.

 

Ensures efficient processes for documenting all compliance related initiatives.

 

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in hospital, business administration or related field required; Masters or J.D. preferred; minimum of 5 years’ experience in a Compliance leadership role in a health care/hospital environment.

 

Possesses technical and professional legal, and analytical skills; thorough understanding of the regulatory environment of healthcare/hospital organizations, ethics, pertinent legislations, OIG processes and billing; the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-organizational employees; competency in forming and negotiating strong partnerships across internal departments; aptitude in communicating and mediating with external agencies/facilities on issues and programs; proficiency in conveying information to executive leadership, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and strategic initiatives; outstanding interpersonal, organization and communication skills essential; has the appropriate oral and written communication and leadership skills to train, supervise and advise others.
