Your role

CBC Windsor is looking for a video-journalist to tell the stories of Windsor-Essex County. This is a full-time permanent position. 

A keen observer and critical thinker, you thrive in the fast-paced, high-pressure world of multi-platform news. You are passionate about telling stories that matter and skilled at presenting information in a creative, easily digestible way. You are a standout colleague who values collaboration and is quick to jump in to help the team.

As someone with a deep knowledge of Windsor-Essex County, you understand its political and social landscape, its economy, and how these are continually evolving. You understand the issues that impact the daily lives of people who live here. You are passionate about seeing the region from new and different perspectives, and amplifying the voices of people from under-represented communities. The Windsor-Essex region matters to you, you are committed to serving everyone who lives here, and you want to see their stories reach as many people as possible. 

In this role, you will work independently with the support of a producer, under the editorial direction of the executive producer. You will pitch original story ideas, research, gather, package and present video stories, along with digital and audio versions to serve our multi-platform audience. You will ensure that our stories adhere to the CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices, are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful and immediate, and that they resonate with the communities we serve.

Your responsibilities:

Pitch, research, write and produce original stories for digital, radio, TV and streaming that will engage and inform our Windsor-Essex audience.

Present stories live on-air, providing analysis and context to enhance the audience’s understanding of issues.

Respond quickly to breaking news events as they unfold.

Distill large amounts of complex information under tight time constraints.

Cultivate working relationships with sources and contacts.

Collaborate with colleagues to develop and break stories, plan features and coordinate long-term coverage.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong, original stories.

Strong connection to - and knowledge of - communities in Windsor-Essex County.

Experience with various news platforms, including digital, video, radio and social media.

Ability to disseminate complex information to a general audience.

Experience shooting and editing video and the technical know-how to troubleshoot when things go wrong. Audio gathering and editing skills an asset.

Ability to present stories live on-air, whether in-studio or from the field.

Experience with Freedom of Information requests and database journalism, and the ability to work a beat, are assets.

Ability to work in high-pressure environments with considerable deadline constraints.

Willingness to learn and tackle new tasks across all CBC platforms.

Thorough knowledge of the CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices. 

Ability to forge positive working relationships on a team that values collaboration and transparency.

Strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of three years of recent, related experience in a newsroom.

Possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada’s insurance company.

Ability to work a variety of shifts including early starts, late finishes and weekends.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
