The visiting assistant professor will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, conducting research, and contributing to the department’s academic community. The visiting assistant professor of Astrophysics will contribute to the programmatic development of concentration and minor degrees in Astrophysics. This position is for a one-year term, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and departmental needs. Completion of the Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, astrophysics or a related discipline is required prior to or shortly after the date of hire. Previous teaching experience is preferred. We seek a person with a strong commitment to undergraduate education. Academic responsibilities will include teaching an introductory-level course for non-majors. Preference will be given to candidates with flexibility to teach upper-level physics and/or astronomy courses for majors and/or courses. Although the candidate will have no research requirements during this appointment, collaboration with current faculty is possible. The department has 6 faculty members with research in quantum and optical physics, biophysics, and geophysics. Minimum Qualifications Completion of a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, astrophysics or a related discipline is required prior to or shortly after the date of hire. Preferred Qualifications Prior teaching experience; a strong commitment to undergraduate education. Essential Functions and percent of time: The teaching load for this position will be at 24 credits hours per year with expected service. Teach undergraduate and graduate courses. 75% Service departmental, university, and community related functions. 25% Essential Functions and percent of time (cont'd): Non-Essential Functions and percent of time: Working Conditions Special contract terms and conditions of employment apply.
