Job Summary

The Senior Cloud Platform Engineer will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, availability, and performance of our organization's platform infrastructure, applying effective system engineering principles to infrastructure operations and processes to create highly reliable and scalable platforms in support of our applications. This trusted advisor will work closely with architecture, cloud engineering and site reliability teams, influencing development of reliable products, standardization of common solutions and patterns, and adoption of resiliency and dependability principles.

 

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in designing, implementing, automating, and maintaining robust and scalable infrastructure platforms to support critical applications and services. The candidate must be able to successfully operate within cross-functional teams, including architects, software engineers, cloud engineers, site reliability engineers, operations, and security teams, to develop and implement systems per best practices. We are looking for a candidate that will perform administration of infrastructure platforms through monitoring, tracking, reporting, and constant review of best practices, with a focus on system improvements through automation to advance efficiency and reliability of the platform infrastructure.

 

This is a Hybrid (onsite three times a week) opportunity to our Farmers Oklahoma City, OK office.  Our Oklahoma City, OK address is: 7340 W. Memorial Road, Oklahoma City, OK 73142.

What You'll Do

•    Design and implement highly available and scalable platforms to ensure the reliability and performance of applications and infrastructure.
•    Document and recommend policies, procedures, and systems architecture for engineered systems in adherence to best practices.
•    Provide technical recommendations to the architecture team to provide functional solutions to meet business problems and create build standardization.
•    Participate with planning, oversight, and implementation of successful DR strategy to include regular DR testing.
•    Monitor and analyze system performance, identifying and addressing potential bottlenecks, issues, and inefficiencies.
•    Develop change documentation and follow change management processes with the inclusion of system verification and back out plan.
•    Work closely with Public Cloud and Site Reliability Engineering teams to create playbooks for automation.
•    Assist Incident Management with troubleshooting of issues and Problem Management on root cause analysis.
•    Assist monitoring and SRE teams with the implementation of systems tools (Wintel, UNIX, VMware, Storage, Backup, Cloud).
•    Work with Site Reliability Engineering to automate incident creation, response, and self-healing scripts.
•    Maintain governance over vendors providing IaaS and PaaS for Farmers, both on-prem and off.
•    Work closely with various internal teams and auditors to generate timely audit reports.
•    Schedule, perform, and support regular systems maintenance, including host, VM, and application updates.
•    Continuously evaluate and implement new technologies and tools to improve system reliability and efficiency.
•    Document system configurations, processes, and procedures to facilitate knowledge sharing and maintain system integrity.
•    Deploy new infrastructure adhering to recommended best practices and hardening policies.
•    Oversee the health, capacity, patch level and overall status of platform systems.
•    Apply patches and platform upgrades for systems and images.
•    Generate operations reports related to system capacity and utilization.
•    Regularly review system logs for issue prevention and provide timely resolution to discovered issues.
•    Deploy and maintain enterprise virtual desktop infrastructure environments, both on-prem and cloud.
•    Operational support of existing technologies with focus around VxBlock, PowerFlex, and VxRail. 
•    Ability to work nonstandard hours when necessary and be available for an on-call rotational schedule. 
•    Ensure 24x7 availability of in-house systems.
•    Interfaces with SRE and Public Cloud teams to drive standardization.

What You'll Bring

5-7 years of related experience required.

•    Proven experience in designing, building, and maintaining highly available and scalable distributed systems, preferred.
•    Proficient in automation tools such as Ansible and Terraform, preferred.
•    Systems Administrations experience of VMware, Linux, and Windows, preferred.
•    Scripting experience with Bash, shell, Python, PowerShell, or Perl, preferred.
•    Experience with continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipelines and related tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD), preferred.
•    VMware administration using vSphere 6.x or higher in medium to large environment, preferred.
•    Experience in public cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GPC, preferred.
•    Experience supporting storage configurations for NAS and SAN, PowerMax, PowerScale, ECS, DataDomain, preferred.
•    Experience with Dell VxBlock, PowerFlex, VxRail, or other converged and hyper-converged systems, preferred.
•    Solid understanding of networking concepts and protocols (OSI, IP addressing, routing protocols, VLAN), preferred.
•    Experience planning, deploying, and configuring of converged/hyperconverged infrastructure, preferred.
•    Experience handling hardware issues with third party vendors, preferred.
•    Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting techniques with ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner, preferred.
•    Ability to adhere to documentation and deployment best practices, preferred.
•    Knowledge of security best practices and experience implementing security measures in distributed systems, preferred.
•    Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams, preferred.

Education Requirements

•    High School diploma or equivalent required.
•    Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university preferred.
•    5-7 years related experience required.
•    Professional certification in cloud, server OS, virtualization technologies, or others preferred.

Physical Actions

This role, whether performed virtually or in an office setting, will include normal and customary distractions, noise, and interruptions. Sits or stands for extended periods of time, up to a full work shift. Occasionally reaches overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping. Occasionally moves, lifts, carries, and places objects and supplies weighing 0-10 pounds without assistance. Listens to, interprets, and differentiates auditory information (example others speaking) at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Visually verifies and reads information. Visually locates material, resources and other objects. Ability to continuously operate a computer for extended periods of time, up to a full work shift. Physical dexterity sufficient to use hands, arms, and shoulders repetitively to operate keyboard and other office equipment up to a full work shift.
