GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PURPOSE:

The VP, Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) and Enterprise Strategy leads the development and execution of a comprehensive enterprise strategy for the entire organization, while also leading and overseeing a global EHS strategy and department that ensures a culture of safety, compliance, and sustainability. This role drives transformational initiatives that enhance organizational performance, align strategic priorities, and foster innovation and growth across all business functions and regions. By providing visionary leadership for EHS and Enterprise Strategy, this position guides the organization toward best-in-class safety, environmental stewardship, performance, strategic alignment, all while advancing the Mission, Vision, Corporate Values, and Long-Range Business Plans.

Strategic and Functional

Develop and implement a global EHS strategy that aligns with the company’s overall business objectives and drives cultural change towards safety and security excellence. Collaborate with executive leadership and regional teams to ensure the seamless integration of EHS and security principles into the company’s global operations, with a focus on proactive risk management and compliance. Establish and communicate clear, measurable goals for EHS performance, leveraging data analytics and trend analysis to continuously improve safety standards across all business units.

Global Compliance & Risk Management:

Oversee compliance with international EHS and security regulations, ensuring adherence to standards set by organizations such as OSHA, CSA, EPA, FRA, and equivalent global regulatory bodies. Lead the development of robust risk management frameworks that anticipate and address emerging safety, environmental and security issues, ensuring business continuity and regulatory compliance.

Sustainability & Innovation:

Drive the company’s sustainability efforts, focusing on reducing environmental impact through innovative practices and cutting-edge technologies. Partner with cross-functional teams to integrate sustainability into product design, manufacturing processes, and supply chain practices.

Corporate Security & Crisis Management:

Develop and maintain a global corporate emergency response framework to safeguard employees, equipment and facilities against internal and external threats. Establish robust protocols for threat assessment, crisis management, and emergency response, ensuring organizational preparedness for incidents ranging from industrial accidents to natural disasters and security breaches.

Corporate Strategy Development and Execution

Lead the creation of comprehensive annual strategic plans and long-range plans that define the organization’s vision for sustainable growth and competitive advantage. These plans will integrate market insights, operational priorities, and financial goals to provide a clear direction for the company. Formalize and execute company’s strategic planning process by establishing a robust, repeatable strategic planning framework that ensures consistency, clarity, and alignment across the organization.

Corporate Strategy Development and Execution (cont’d)

Garner global market intelligence through strong working relationships with Business Unit Leaders and key stakeholders. Leverage these insights to identify emerging trends, competitive dynamics, growth opportunities, and a deep understanding of global market conditions. Act as a steward of the organization’s foundational principles by ensuring all strategic initiatives align with the company’s Vision, Mission, and Values. This includes evaluating proposed initiatives against these guiding principles to maintain coherence and integrity in decision-making. Organize and lead annual strategy workshops with the executive leadership team to review progress, refine priorities, and align on strategic objectives. Foster an environment of open dialogue, creative problem-solving, and collaboration to ensure collective buy-in and shared accountability for the company’s strategic direction.

Leadership & Talent Development:

Build and lead a high-performing global EHS team, fostering collaboration and accountability across regions. Mentor and develop EHS leaders, equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to drive safety and environmental initiatives at a local level while maintaining global cohesion. Promote a culture of safety engagement and visible leadership, empowering employees at all levels to prioritize EHS in their daily operations. Establish and nurture strong relationships with leaders globally to drive strategic vision, provide organizational direction, and ensure global alignment to the company’s strategic initiatives.

Financial

Responsible for managing departmental expense budgets of approximately $2M and company benefits programs annually. Leads a team of approximately 11 people.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Security Management, or related field.

Experience: 15+ years’ progressive occupational health, safety and environmental experience, and experience in senior leadership roles, and global EHS and corporate security management.

Licenses/Certifications: Obtain and Maintain railroad safety training and certifications.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Master’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Engineering, or related field

Experience: 13+ years’ progressive occupational health, safety and environmental experience, and experience in senior leadership roles, and global EHS and corporate security management.

Licenses/Certifications: CSP, SIH, CHMM, CPP, or equivalent
