About Wabash Valley Correctional Facility:
As a part of the Indiana Department of Correction, the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility promotes public safety by providing meaningful, effective opportunities for successful re-entry. The Wabash Valley Correctional Facility is a multi-level security Correctional facility for adult males. The Wabash Valley Correctional Facility is located in Carlisle, Indiana. The Wabash Valley Correctional Facility has both minimum security and maximum security and offers multiple programs to meet the needs of the incarcerated population, including the Special Needs Acclimation Program or SNAP. Wabash Valley’s staff have implemented many beneficial programs to ensure a well-run facility that offers incarcerated individuals a genuine opportunity for growth while maintaining public safety. The facility is also heavily involved in the community, providing support to local food pantries, schools, and other community organizations.
Role Overview:
As a Warden, you will work independently consulting with the Indiana Department of Correction Central Office on the establishment of policies and procedures. You will have the authority to decide the operating, security, and program functions of the facility. You will be responsible for the overall day-to-day operation along with possible incidents. You will often serve as the Department’s spokesperson to community groups and community officials. As a Warden, you will have a major impact on the achievement of the Department’s overall goals. You will be on-call 24/7, 365 days a year unless a replacement has been designated. Additionally, you will be required to walk around the facility frequently and engage with staff and the incarcerated individuals.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $93,002.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
+ Provides overall management of all aspects of high/medium security facility operations. This includes development, establishment and implementation of facility goals, policies, and procedures;
+ Directs the programs and operations of the facility which may include contractual entities in accordance with the policy guidelines and program directives provided by the Department of Correction;
+ Manages the operations and performance of contractual entities (i.e., Food Services, Medical Services etc.) as well as overall vendor management;
+ Directs staff selection, training, and evaluation of staff performance;
+ Coordinates the program operations of the facility in accordance with other central office divisions;
+ Manages facility budget;
+ Ensures appropriate and effective management of offenders;
+ Partners with various groups on outreach programs regarding facility operations;
+ Recruits, selects, onboards, and trains employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development;
+ Sets expectations, measures progress, provides ongoing feedback, and evaluates the performance of employees. Ensures work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.
What You'll Need for Success:
The ideal candidate in this role should minimally have
+ a High School Diploma or HSE diploma, and
+ at least 10+ years of experience applying the below, outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role.
Related certifications and coursework may be considered for education or experience.
+ Five (5) years of supervisory experience;
+ Broad knowledge of the correctional law, regulations, and court decisions;
+ Advanced knowledge of methods and operations used in treatment, rehabilitation and resocialization;
+ Advanced knowledge of public administration principles;
+ Ability to manage and direct the programs and activities of a facility;
+ Ability to effectively handle unprecedented challenges that may arise in a correctional facility;
+ Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow;
+ Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.
+ Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role provides supervision for incarcerated individuals and requires a high level of judgment and care.
This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
Difficulty of Work:
As a Warden, you will exercise considerable judgment and ingenuity to develop facility procedures to implement department policies. Few guidelines exist as you will supervise and manage a staff of many different disciplines. The work is very complex, involving constantly changing variables in determining the kind/extent of programs, supervising the custody staff, and ensuring accountability of the total incarcerated individual population. The complexity of the work is increased because of the large number of incarcerated individuals and the type of incarcerated individuals housed in the facility.
Personal Work Relationships:
A high level of judgement and effective communication is required during times of contact with residents or incarcerated individuals.
Residents or incarcerated individuals may have family, friends, community partners and/or other interested parties come to the facility requesting information or to visit with the person according to policies and procedures.
Partnership with relevant public agencies, federal, state & local governments and/or community leaders may be required.
This individual will be expected to partner with agency personnel and related stakeholders working towards completion of assigned functions. Exceptional customer service is provided to agency partners and/or the general public.
Physical Effort:
This role requires keen observational and hearing skills to stay alert for possible dangerous situations.
This role performs work in an environment where sitting for extended periods of time could be expected.
Working Conditions:
Operations may require this role to be available after hours (on-call) and/or work rotating shifts, evenings and weekends, or irregular hours.
This role performs work in a standard office environment.
This role requires a high level of attention and safety due to work activities having risk of injury or loss of life.
This role may experience periods of high stress and/or pressure.
This role performs work in a cell house, dormitory or other residential environment.
