Position Purpose:

Provides day-to-day monitoring of equipment, routine lab test, and minor maintenance activities.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

Operates equipment manually and through instrument panels, computers terminals, and programmable logic controls units in an assigned area. Performs field test (chemical, physical and biological) in order to pace chemical dosages for process and odor control units or alter unit processes. Records observations and data in area shift log; diagnoses basic operational problems and takes corrective action; and communicates status, changes, and abnormalities in operating areas. Follows process control procedures for assigned areas; verifies and reports suspected malfunctions and variances to supervisor. Operates vehicles such as trucks, forklifts, loaders, carts, etc. for plant operational purposes.

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background:

High School Diploma/GED required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Must demonstrate a working ability to use computer programs for process control. Must develop a working knowledge of the methods, techniques, principles, and practices of water/wastewater treatment. Ability to diagnose plant wide process problems and take remedial action, and to troubleshoot equipment. Requires good reading, math, writing, and verbal communication skills; a mechanical aptitude; and the ability to read, interpret, and record data from meters, gauges, scales, panels, computer consoles, and other equipment.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

Valid Driver's License and a safe driving record. Must obtain and maintain Rhode Island Class 1 wastewater certification within one year of appointment to Operator.
