SCOPE OF POSITION:
Responsible for teaching children about sailing and other water sports.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
High School Diploma preferred Certified US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 Instructor or equivalent Powerboat driving experience required with valid Washington or Oregon State boaters card Minimum two years sailing experience Excellent sailing skills with the ability to instruct sailing students Technical knowledge of sailing Some prior teaching experience is preferred 2 years sailing and youth sailor coaching experience giving chalk-talks, on-the-water practices, etc. Past participation in youth, high school, and/or collegiate programs with a competitive focus Technical experience with 420 sailboats or other single/double-handed dinghies Responsible, reliable, and enthusiastic with good judgment and class leadership skills Excellent customer service skills First Aid and CPR Ability to follow oral and written directions Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Capable of maintaining positive working relationships with staff and customers Able to interact effectively with a diverse populationESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ensure an outstanding safe, organized, and educational experience to campers on land and water Instruct youth sailors ranging from beginner to advanced (ages 10-17) on 420 sailboats or other single/double-handed dinghies Exhibit commitment to teamwork, strong working relationships, and supporting fellow instructors Assist sailors in goal setting with a focus on skill progression and advancement Encourage participation and motivate sailors to a high level of commitment at practices Implement constructive daily lesson plans using scheduled program times, combining classroom and on-the-water lessons or activities Desire to help students improve their sailing abilities Make appropriate decisions to ensure safety of students and boating staff Conduct pre-practice chalk-talk with instruction and plan-of the-day Explain and demonstrate proper sailing techniques Ensure all evolutions are safely executed Assist in making sound weather decisions by monitoring weather and water traffic conditions Assist in direction of sailing instructors and safety boat officers as directed by sailing lead Participate in the daily de-briefing and secure all boats and equipment daily Physically assist sailors in launching, rigging, and storing boats Facilitate minor repairs and daily maintenance as needed Perform seamanship tasks; keep boats, equipment, and storage facility clean and organized Evaluate and document progress/improvement of sailing students’ skills Maintain open communication with students, parents, staff, and supervisor Exhibit a sense of maturity and responsibility for the program Act as an appropriate role model encouraging the highest level of sportsmanlike behavior Conduct parent/sailor organizational meeting prior to summer Responsible for sail and power boat fleet readiness to get underway Instruct safety boat swimmer on responsibilities as assigned Inspect equipment before/after class and clean equipment after use Understand and enforce Camp Gifford and Washington State rules/regulations related to powered watercraft use as they pertain to staff and campers Operate safety boat in accordance with US Sailing best practices Interact with counselors & campers to foster a quality camping experience per The Salvation Army’s stated camping program goalsGENERAL DUTIES:
Exhibit effective Christ-like conduct and service as an appropriate example for campers and staff Give support to the total camping program performing all other duties required to provide a consistently excellent program Attend and participate in all camp programs as required including, but not limited to evening programs, chapel activities, and staff meetings Follow all policies and procedures Maintain cleanliness and order in your person and living quarters Assist with cleanup of the total camp at the end of each session and at the conclusion of the summerPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis Grasp, push, pull objects, and reach overhead Operate a telephone and computer Lift up to 25 lbs.
