Position Summary
The City of Bozeman Water Reclamation Facility team is excited to be accepting applications for a Water Reclamation Facility Operator. The ideal candidate will be passionate about protecting the East Gallatin River through the collection and testing of water samples and the operation and maintenance of a variety complex mechanical equipment including pumps, compressors, blowers, boilers, turbines, vehicles, and electrical systems in assigned division.

Work Week: Monday - Friday 7:00am - 3:00om during initial training and/or transitioning to four 10-hour days from Wednesday -Saturday or Sunday - Wednesday. *Shifts may vary as needed.
Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)
+ Collects and conducts tests on water samples in accordance with EPA and State regulations;
+ Maintains complete and accurate records of facility operation functions, tests, results, and preventive and corrective maintenance work performed;
+ Operates a variety of mechanical gates and valves to regulate the flow of wastewater through various treatment processes to ensure the production of effluent water;
+ Performs treatment analysis and processes control tests;
+ Adjusts equipment to maintain treatment parameters, and to maintain proper flows to ensure maximum efficiency of facility equipment;
+ Inspects facility equipment and reports any failures or operating difficulties, including initiating work orders and request repairs;
+ Performs preventive and corrective maintenance, mechanical troubleshooting, and repair on equipment, vehicles, and facilities to ensure safe and efficient operation, including welding, fabrication, carpentry, plumbing, and minor electrical repairs;
+ Inspects, lubricates, and services vehicles and equipment according to prescribed schedules;
+ Repairs or rebuilds City equipment including pumps, electric motors, boilers, compressors, blowers, boilers, turbines, gear reducers, valves, tractors, loaders, graders, lawn mowers, and other related equipment;
+ Operates, adjusts, and performs basic maintenance of facility equipment to ensure compliance with established standards, including welding, fabrication, carpentry, and minor electrical repairs;
+ Observes meters, gauges, charts, and instruments, and accurately records all findings accordingly;
+ Monitors facility operations to ensure all processes are conducted in a safe and efficient manner, and in compliance with Federal rules and regulations;
+ Ensures all chemicals are handled in a safe and proper manner;
+ Maintains the interior and exterior of the Treatment Facility in a clean and orderly manner to ensure a safe work environment;
+ Reads and interprets manuals, drawings, and specifications as required;
+ Operates a variety of hand, power, and shop tools, light, medium, and heavy duty equipment, and vehicles appropriate to the functional area of assignment;
+ Observes safe work methods, and utilizes related safety equipment as required;
+ Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;
+ Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
+ Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;
+ Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
+ Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
+ Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.
Minimum Required Qualifications
+ High School Diploma or GED; and
+ At least two years formal training or education beyond high school in Water Quality Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or a closely related field (Associate’s Degree is preferred); and
+ Some (1-3 years) experience in lab work or water analysis; and
+ Some (1-3 years) experience working with mechanical systems and equipment, including operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair; or
+ Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Substantial knowledge of the basic principles and practices of wastewater treatment and reuse;
+ Substantial knowledge of the use and maintenance of related hand and power tools;
+ Substantial knowledge of established basic principles of record keeping;
+ Substantial knowledge of Federal, State, and City safety rules, regulations, policies, and procedures;
+ Substantial knowledge of mathematics, physics, and fluid flow to ensure accurate and efficient measurements and calculations;
+ Substantial knowledge of related electrical and electronics principles and troubleshooting techniques;
+ Ability to analyze mathematical and physical data in an efficient and precise manner;
+ Ability to collect, test, and analyze wastewater samples;
+ Ability to read and interpret piping diagrams and equipment shop drawings;
+ Ability to learn to read and interpret pump curves;
+ Ability to work with hazardous chemicals and high voltage electricity in a safe and proper manner;
+ Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
+ Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;
+ Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;
+ Ability to operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;
+ Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
+ Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
+ Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
+ Integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
Required Special Qualifications
+ Valid Driver’s License at time of hire and obtain a Montana Driver’s License within 60 days of employment;
+ Satisfactory response to the appropriate post-conditional offer process;
+ Must be able to respond to the Bozeman Water Reclamation Facility within 20 minutes of being notified when assigned to stand-by;
