The Opportunity with McKinstry

We are currently seeking a Water Systems Operator (WSO) to join our team as a member of our Utility of Engineering Services team in Moscow, Idaho on the University of Idaho campus. The Water Systems Operator (WSO) performs work on domestic water distribution, sewer storm systems and special use systems. This is an essential position that will be called upon in the event of an emergency and/or University closure. The WSO works with the Water System Manager to operate and maintain:

The domestic water systems of campus to comply with strict Health and Safety codes according to EPA, AWWA standards, and Idaho DEQ requirements.
The University's Reclaimed Water Distribution System in compliance with EPA and Idaho DEQ requirements
The University Sewer and Storm Distribution System in compliance with the EPA and Idaho DEQ requirements

Your work includes:

Drawing water samples, record data and submitting for testing according to state and Federal code. Operate and maintain university wells, water storage tanks, pipes, and pump houses, sewer & storm Manholes, Catch-basins and reclaimed water lagoons. Operate and maintain SCADA Controls for water system Testing & repairing and keep records of backflow devices including replacing when needed. Operate and maintain chlorine disinfectant systems including sodium hypochlorite system Identify and resolve potential problems before they arise Do daily maintenance and repairs on domestic, wastewater, stormwater and reclaimed water systems.    Respond to all water systems problems and emergency calls during normal and after hours included serving on weekly call-out rotation. Work with other trades to complete projects in a timely manner. Ensure compliance with all safety policies, procedures, and Utility Plant work practices. Follow all safety regulations, including working in confined spaces, lockout tag-out procedures, fall protection, wearing personal protective gear as needed, and other safety related rules. Other duties as assigned.

What You Need to Succeed at McKinstry

Strong knowledge of hydrology as it relates to surface and groundwater, including hydraulics and water quality fields. Must have strong backflow prevention knowledge. Knowledge of water distribution systems, reclaimed water, sewer collection systems, wastewater lagoons, and water-polluting sources. Experience installing, maintaining, and repairing domestic water systems. Basic level of proficiency in Microsoft Office and Water Distribution Management Software. Knowledge of SCADA Controls preferred. Must have or be able to obtain the following licenses as an operator in training:

o    Idaho Backflow Assembly Tester - within 1 year of hire
o    Idaho Wastewater Treatment Operator Class 1 or greater - within two years of hire
o    Idaho Wastewater Treatment Operator Land Application - within two years of hire
o    Idaho Drinking Water Distribution Operator Class 2 or greater - within three years of hire

Journeyman Plumber's license preferred

Physical Demands and Work Environment  

Must be able to lift 60 pounds, climb and work from ladders Must be able to work in inclement weather and in conditions where PPE is required Perform job function in a variety weather condition including dust, humidity, extreme temperature fluctuations both inside and outside. Must be able to lift or otherwise move up to 60lbs, bend, stoop, crawl, and work in confined spaces and at heights of 100 feet.

The pay range for this position is $20.39 - $32.41 per hour; however, base pay offered my vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This is a non-exempt role and will be paid hourly. A bonus may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered. Base pay information is based on market location.
