Water Works Swim Instructor

The YMCA is hiring up to six Swim and Lifeguard Instructors to assist with the Water Works Aquatics program. This is a temporary, part-time position with the potential for longer-term employment. Water Works(tm) is a brand-new YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago career exploration program where you will help introduce and prepare participants for a whole new world of careers in and around water. From Lifeguard to Oceanographer, you will help participants obtain first-hand exposure to a variety of water-related careers. You will also help provide varied levels of swim instruction, certification, and career development programming focused on water-related careers.

Salary is $19.00 per hour with opportunities to grow within the organization

Responsibilities

  Instruct participants with varying swimming abilities on proper swimming techniques and strokes according to YMCA Swim Curriculum.  Create and deliver lesson plans that consider participants’ swimming abilities and progressive development.  Continuously track and evaluate participants’ swimming performance and adjusting lesson plan accordingly.  Provide feedback to participants to facilitate improvement, refine abilities and prevent injury.  Set up facility or equipment, and stores equipment upon completion of class. Immediately notifies supervisor of any broken equipment or unsafe aspects of the pool.  Prevent accidents and injuries by monitoring students during swim sessions.  Acts as a primary responder in case of injury, accident, or illness in pool area and provides backup to lifeguards as needed in emergencies and crowd control.  Report injuries and complete incident forms.  Maintain job-related certifications and attend training as required. Requirements

Must be at least 18 years of age.

High school Diploma or equivalent At least 3 years of aquatics experience 

Passion for working with diverse youth and ability to provide a high-quality of instruction using age-appropriate practices

Must remain vigilant for dangerous situations in order to assure the safety of all participants.

Must be physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid effectively.

Demonstrates evidence of YMCA Team competencies in previous experience or practice

Meets physical qualifications required for certification in job

Current certification YMCA Swim Lessons or ARC Water Safety Instructor

CPR, First Aid, AED and Oxygen certification

Must be able to successfully complete the YMCA’s Aquatics Academy training program resulting in certification, if not already certified

Lifeguarding certification (preferred)

Lifeguarding Instructor (preferred)
