Weekend Anchor

WGMB/WVL in Baton Rouge, LA is looking for an experienced journalist to anchor and lead our weekend evening/late night newscasts. We are looking for someone who will connect with our viewers and work with the producers, meteorologists, sports department, and digital content producers to craft engaging, informative, and educational newscasts and digital products. WGMB/WVLA anchors are working journalists not just news readers. The successful candidate will be a strong newsroom leader who takes an active role in shaping the day’s news coverage. You’ll participate in editorial meetings and work with the weekend team to craft fresh and relevant newscasts. Strong, conversational writing and copyediting skills are a must. You will serve as a mentor to reporters, producers, and the studio production team. You must be active on digital platforms to ensure we are staying on top of breaking news. You will work as a reporter/multimedia journalist three days a week. We are looking for a reporter/MMJ who wants to lead the newscasts, break stories in the market, and produce exclusive reports.

JOB SUMMARY:

Deliver newscasts and news stories accurately, clearly and concisely.  Evaluate news leads to develop story ideas as part of the weekend editorial meeting.  Make editorial decisions for weekend newscast.Mentor weekend producers, reporters, photographers and assignment editorsWrite teases and stories as needed. Copyedit scripts.Report three days a week as an MMJ.Conducts interviews with public officials and members of the public.Responds to breaking news and other urgent situations as required.Participates in promotional activities including public appearances.Performs special projects and other duties as assigned. Writes content for the website and other eMedia platforms.Interacts with viewers/users on social media sites.Shoot and edit video as assigned.

Specialized Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Must interact positively and productively with employees in the field and in the studio.Strong news judgement with an expansive knowledge of local and national current events, history, newsmakers and issues.Solid vocal delivery, camera presence, and clear enunciation.Strong reporting skills.Understand importance of social media.Excellent reading, writing, spelling, grammar and organizational skills.Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.Promotes teamwork and maintains attitude of cooperation with all station personnel.Valid driver’s license with a good driving record

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in communication/journalism or related degree required (equivalent years of experience may substitute for education); plus (3) years television anchoring or reporting experience preferred.

Training/Equipment: Operate newsroom computer systems, camera and editing equipment.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements: Newsrooms can be high stress environments with deadline pressures. Some travel may be required. Position requires work on weekends and holidays.
