Job Summary
Under general supervision, is responsible for performing skilled work at the journey level in Mig & Tig acetylene and electric arc welding, brazing, and metal cutting of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. May exercise functional supervision.

Work Hours
6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.; Monday - Friday. Shifts are subject to change to accommodate seasonal adjustments, evening coverage, weekends, and holiday shiftwork based on department needs.
Essential Job Functions
+ Pre-heats and cleans metals.
+ Lays out, cuts, and fits materials for welding.
+ Welds machinery and equipment using Mig & Tig acetylene or electric arc welding equipment.
+ Performs cutting and welding operations on structural steel, pipe and fitting, crankcases, radiators, tanks, brackets, truck frames, and automotive bodies which may require frequently lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds.
+ Brazes various non-ferrous metals.
+ Inspects, brushes, and grinds welds.
+ Performs general repair work on graders, draglines, and other road equipment operating the tools and equipment of the welding trade.
+ Reads, interprets, and works from blueprints, working drawings, and broken parts assisting colleagues when needed.
+ Lays out welding work and makes simple estimates of time and material requirements.
+ Designs and fabricates metal items and equipment as necessary.
+ Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Job Requirements
+ High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
+ Three (3) years of welding experience.
+ Valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Ability to effectively communicate in English.
+ Ability to construct items using blueprints or drawings.
+ One (1) year of experience using a work order system, such as SAP.

+ Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
+ Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Knowledge of all tools, equipment, techniques, terminology, and materials of the welding trade, to include cost of materials.
+ Knowledge of hazards and safety procedures and equipment as they apply to the welding trade.
+ Knowledge of metallurgy.
+ Knowledge of basic design practices.
+ Skill in operating tools used in the welding trade, including chop saws, band saws, drill press, bench and angle grinder, welding machines, cutting torches, acetylene welding equipment, electric hand tools, standard hand tools, rotary hammers, and jack hammers.
+ Skill in operating equipment used in the welding trade, to include tractors, forklifts, versa-lifts, and high rangers.
+ Ability to work under minimal supervision.
+ Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
+ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
+ Ability to make decisions and prioritize assignments.
+ Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
+ Ability to read plans and blueprints.
+ Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
+ Working conditions are primarily in a shop or construction site environment, with frequent exposure to high voltage, dust, noise, and dangerous equipment and materials.
