WIC Certifier/ International Board Certified Lactation Consultant- Bilingual Preferred

Joyfulness- Maintaining a good attitude, even when faced with unpleasant conditions.   Summary of Duties and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the WIC Clinic Manager, the WIC Certifier/International Board Certified Lactation Consultant is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating lactation plans for the breastfeeding/chest-feeding dyad, as well as for the pumping parent, and is fully collaborative with the participant, participant’s family, significant others, and members of the health care team. The WIC Certifier/International Board Certified Lactation Consultant will also assess pregnant women, breastfeeding women, non-breastfeeding women, infants, and children for eligibility to participate in the WIC program.   Primary Duties and Responsibilities:  Completes certification and recertification of eligibility for WIC services, using PHOCIS software and following Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) WIC Service guidelines. Obtains weight, height, and blood specimen for analysis of hemoglobin level.  Accurately documents and assesses the results. Assesses and documents the WIC participant’s nutrition risk. Assesses and documents maternal and infant health and breastfeeding goals. Issues WIC food packages and explains the participant’s benefits. Issues breast pumps and supplies as needed. Evaluates nutrition status of individuals and provides basic nutrition education to prenatal women, breastfeeding women, and infants. Refers high nutrition risk participants to clinic Nutritionist for follow up. Facilitates group nutrition classes for pregnant and post-partum women, infants, and children. Communicates effectively with participants, families, physicians, and coworkers, being an advocate for the participant at all times. Makes referrals to other health professionals and programs. Maintains records and prepares reports.  Maintains inventory of breastfeeding supplies for clinic and assists with ordering supplies as needed. Cleans equipment, including multi-user breast pumps, and restocks supplies in lab rooms/office. Follows all roles and responsibilities of a WIC Designated Breastfeeding Experts/International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Acts on all referrals in a timely manner from Breastfeeding Peer Counselors and other WIC staff regarding complex breastfeeding situations beyond their scope of practice. Refers participants back to the source of referral for follow up and continuity of care. Provides in-patient clinical lactation support and onsite WIC services. Functions as one of the clinic’s Designated Breastfeeding Experts. Provides individual consults for breastfeeding clients while staying within the Internation Board Certified Lactation Consultant scope of practice. Serves as a clinic/community resource regarding lactation. Provides staff training or in-services concerning breastfeeding. Promotes and assists with annual World Breastfeeding Week events. May facilitate breastfeeding support groups. Answers and routes telephone calls, reviews, and responds to all work-related electronic communication. Demonstrates Variety Care core values in everyday work and assists with meeting WIC program goals. Performs other duties as assigned.   Requirements, Special Skills, or Knowledge: High school diploma/GED. Current certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Two years’ experience in a health clinic, related organization, or specialized training in medical services or nutrition. Must pass a certification test from Oklahoma State Department of Health for a Certified WIC Nutrition Technician within 6 months from employment date. Expert verbal and written communication skills. Experience working independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Expert computer skills. Expert organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills. Experience teaching and counseling. Experience handling confidential information. Experience working in a multi-faceted, fast-paced environment. Experience handling stressful situations and difficult participants. Experience following oral and/or written instructions. Experience working with people of diverse socioeconomic/cultural backgrounds.   Preferred Requirements, Special Skills, or Knowledge: Bilingual (English/Spanish). Experience or training with the WIC program. Comfortable using virtual technology like Teams or Zoom. Experience in at least one the following areas: Nutritionist Certified WIC Nutrition Therapist (CWNT) or Competent Professional Authority (CPA) such as a Physician, Physician’s Assistant, Registered Nurse, Registered Dietitian, or Licensed Practical Nurse. WIC staff with 2 years’ experience.   Essential Functions:  Must be able to lift 25 pounds.
