Copper Mountain Resort is a vacation destination located 75 miles west of Denver, Colorado in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Three vibrant, pedestrian-friendly village areas host lodging, retail outlets, restaurants, bars, and family activities. During the winter months, Copper's world-class terrain offers skiing and riding for all ages and abilities. Each summer, the mountain transforms into a playground for hikers, mountain bikers, and anyone seeking a genuine Colorado experience. Copper Mountain Resort is also home to Woodward Copper action-sports camps, programs, and training facility.
Volunteer Title: Mountain Safety Patrol Volunteer
Volunteer Summary:
This is an opportunity to volunteer as a team player to help maintain and enforce safety through education and awareness. This includes understanding the Colorado Ski Safety Act and enforcing it on the slopes. You will stand at stations at 20 minute intervals around 6 times per day and focus on education and enforcement, using our Red Card program when appropriate. You will also be asked to assist ski patrol in various duties such as maintaining scene safety, securing the toboggan, obtaining collision witness statements, etc. You will also conduct trail checks, looking for hazards and guests needing assistance. Guest service is a priority and we ask that you provide a positive guest experience while in and out of uniform. Other expectations are that you learn and use proper radio protocol and that you learn the mountain and are accurate in describing your location. Volunteers are expected to provide service for a minimum of 14 days a season, 7 hours a day from November through April, although more days are welcomed. Volunteering 5 weekend days or holidays and during events (from early-season race training through USASA Nationals in April) is required as this is when our services are most needed. Medical skills are not required of MSP volunteers.
Successful applicants will be invited to a spring hiring clinic, which consists of a ski/ride skills assessment and interview. The skills assessment allows you to demonstrate that you have the skills necessary to provide optimal service to our mountain and to Ski Patrol. Follow-up interviews will be granted to those selected from the hiring clinic. Based on the information you provide in the application process you may be sent further questions to narrow down our selection field. This is a very competitive program and we have little attrition each year.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Volunteer must demonstrate through a ski/ride skills assessment the ability to competently ski or ride any blue trail or higher designation here at Copper with confidence and situational awareness. Applicants must be physically fit and able to walk uphill at times in ski/snowboard boots. Applicants must be able to volunteer in all weather conditions, be able to stand in boots for extended period of times with the appropriate winter clothing and protective eye wear and be a team player with a variety of different personalities, while putting the guest experience as the highest priority. Applicants must be flexible to changing assignments.
Administration Duties:
Must be able to navigate mobile apps and have access to either a computer or a mobile device to schedule volunteer shifts.
Guest Service Duties:
Volunteers must anticipate and be comfortable with initiating guest conversations. They need to have a strong knowledge of all the trails to better serve the guest. They need to be willing to provide the unexpected, such as assisting the guest with equipment, directions and information that will make their experience at Copper Mountain remarkable. They need to meet Copper’s grooming standards, and conduct themselves as professionals when in uniform. They need to look and be approachable to guests.

Volunteer must be adaptable to changing expectations.
Functions as a representative of Copper Mountain, modeling and sharing the Copper culture with our guests and employees. Upholds the most professional image. Continually strives to exceed our guest’s expectations and create memories for our guests and staff.

Basic Requirements:
Proficient skier or rider able to confidently ski any blue or lower trail at Copper Mountain
Must be able to be outside and stand for extended periods of time
Must be able to look uphill into the sun with appropriate eye wear for extended periods of time
Must be physically fit and able to walk and ski in boots in variable conditions and uphill to assist as necessary 7 hours a day
Must be able to meet the 14-day/5 Weekend/Holiday requirement, at a minimum, with days spread throughout the season
Must be at least 21 years old
Preferred Experience and Special Skills:
Knowledge of the Skier Responsibility Code and Skier Safety Act preferred
Knowledge and experience in mountain operations useful
Flexibility to volunteer weekends, holidays and/or weekdays during special events at Copper Mountain is essential
