Job Highlights
Youth Apprentices in the Optical Assistant pathway work closely with patients to provide direct patient care related to eye exams and prescription fulfillment. Availability to work days during a standard work week is crucial to fulfilling the 450-hour requirement. A licensed or certified professional will serve as your mentor and will help guide your training while providing ongoing support in the role.

Effectively work as part of a team, communicate effectively with close attention to details
Maintain academic and attendance requirements for participation in the Youth Apprenticeship Program
Participate in progress reviews scheduled with mentors, school staff, parent(s) or guardian(s), and employer
Assist with selection of frames, and measure and fit them for their optical prescription
Instruct clients on how to care for eyewear
Assist with eye exam set-up, cleaning, and restocking
Assist to perform eye exam
Perform other duties as assigned
Education and Experience Requirements
High school junior or senior
16 years of age
Must be authorized and approved by the Wisconsin Youth Apprentice Program in accordance with your local school criteria
Ability to work 10-15 hours per week at a clinic site M-F during the day
Reliable transportation to get to and from work
Satisfactory progress towards graduation
Commit to completing 450 hours at the jobsite
Demonstrated maturity and responsibility
Skill with attending to details, excellent attendance and a strong work ethic
Foster a culture of caring through interpersonal relationships and communication

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Setups of optometry area. Assists in performing eye exams. Assists with measuring patient eye lengths, centers, and distances. Cleans and restocks after procedures. Maintains inventory. Obtains lens prescriptions. Assists with ordering frames and lenses. Instruct how to care for eyewear. Assists patients with selecting frames. Fits glasses to patients. Respects patient confidentiality and maintains Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance. Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner. Performs other duties as assigned.EDUCATION
