Nokia Strategy & Technology, including Nokia Bell Labs and Nokia Standards, is the renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. The department of RAN Architecture in Nokia Standards, Munich, offers the opportunity for a master student to gain practical experience through working with highly skilled colleagues in a scientific environment and contributing to future-looking projects.

Your skills and experience

We are looking for highly motivated candidates who are enthusiastic about developing breakthrough innovations and participate in cutting-edge research in Nokia. Applicants should fulfill the following qualifications: 

A bachelor degree in communications engineering, information theory, or computer science with a grade of at least 2.0 (German grade system equivalent), 

Basic knowledge in communication networks, network virtualization and cloudification,  

Proficiency in relevant programming languages for quantitative evaluations (e.g., Python, C, Matlab), as well as experience in software engineering (e.g. Design Patterns, object oriented programming, etc.) 

Highly proficient in spoken and written English, 

Ability to work independently, 

Ready to collaborate in a diverse team with members of different cultural backgrounds, 

Willingness and ability to get engaged in novel disruptive research areas, which will require the applicant to learn new skills. 

Scope of the work 

The student will work on Nokia’s 6G simulator “SAMPO”. She will run extensive simulation campaigns in SAMPO. She will test the mobility features in SAMPO and document the results showing that mobility KPI’s are as expected. She will then move onto analyzing the packet reliability in Future Railway Mobile Communication Systems (FRMCS) in accordance with 3GPP reference scenarios, the results of which she will present in the project meetings. Specifically, she will investigate the relationship between SINR and PDCP PDU latency, for which she will implement the logging of PDCP PDU’s. Afterwards, she will move onto implementing several methods that would improve the SINR, such as cell densification and beamforming.
