Yahoo UK - Senior News Reporter

 Yahoo UK is looking for an outstanding journalist with excellent reporting skills to join its editorial team and be an integral part of our Trending and Live coverage.

A key part of the newsroom, you will make instant judgements on how to approach stories as they unfold, spotting the strongest angles that resonate with our audience and ensuring Yahoo’s coverage is accurate, engaging and useful. 

This will involve being able to turn your hand to a range of trending topics to produce original and impactful journalism, including everything from geopolitical crises and UK politics to pop culture as required.

You will support the team with its focus on using a format-driven approach that leverages Yahoo News’ dual position as a publisher and a platform to create a unique story-telling experience for users, including the use of visual tools, imagery and data.

As part of this, you will support live blog coverage and help execute a forward-planning content strategy that targets major events in a way that gives our trending coverage the best chance of success.

This role will involve staggered hours, including later start times during the week and some weekend work as required in response to significant moments in the news agenda.

Yahoo has 700 million global monthly users and a footprint in multiple countries and this opportunity is a fantastic chance for you to showcase your talent. This is a full-time position. It is a hybrid role with the opportunity to come into our central London office as and when needed. Please include examples of your work across a range of topics.

A bit more information about the role. You will:

Pitch and produce impactful news stories around trending topics that add value to our existing output on a daily basis

Use analytics/live data to inform editorial decision-making and ensure we reach our audience as effectively as possible - exploring every opportunity to ensure maximum engagement and readership

Be focused on ensuring our content is unique, distinctive and stands out

Help develop innovative ways to tell stories through new format approaches

Collaborate with our audience team to ensure we’re always striving to reach new audiences

Be flexible and able to embrace new ideas 

A bit more information about you. You will:

Have at least 4 years’ reporting experience in digital journalism, including a comprehensive knowledge of how to use a CMS and understand the importance of metadata, tagging, captions and audience insights to ensure our content performs at its best 

Have experience interviewing and sourcing stories with a sound understanding of media law

Have experience of working with data and video or a willingness to learn the required skills

Have an excellent understanding of the UK news landscape and an awareness of what topics audiences are interested in across News, Entertainment, Culture and more

Have a track record of innovation and the ability to constructively challenge convention 

Be inclusive and have excellent communication skills at all levels, and an ability to work collaboratively with multiple teams

Have a National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) qualification or equivalent
